Default Need Advice: Timing adjustments

My 2000 s2000 has 75,000 miles on it. About 3 weeks ago, I noticed a tapping noise in my engine. So, I promptly took it to my local Honda dealership. After diagnosis, they told me my timing chain was loose and that I need to have the hydraulic tensioner replace. Once they got into my engine, they noticed copper fragments in my oil. Evidently, my crank bearings were extremely worn out. I guess I

we had the timing belt on my g/f car changed and my friend that did the work did not have the cam gears aligned correct... the car ran rough and the check engine light came on. after he redid it, it was fine. he said it was off by one tooth.

if the dealership did the timing belt change, it sounds like they did it incorrectly. what dealership was this?

i would take it back to the dealer and demand that the work was done incorrectly. The check engine light + the work on the timing change proves that it was done incorrectly.

good luck in getting this problem figured out... my advice if you want out of warranty work is to take it to Tobi at TC performance http://www.tcperf.com/

All the S2K owners on here can vouch for him, including everyone on HAI.

This information is really helpful. Thanks. I took the car back to Team Honda in Colorado Springs, and to their credit, they had no problems taking it back to find out what's causing the problem free of charge. We also noticed a light ticking sound when we checked it in which they thought was coming from the valves. I'll keep you posted on the repairs.

Just an update: Team Honda adjusted my valves and that fixed the light ticking sound. I replace my spark plugs with NGKR Platnium plugs and it idols much better now. (it had brand new bosh plugs before)

Every now and then, my check engine light still comes on with the error that 2-4 of my cylinders are mis-firing. ...still not sure what's causing that problem, but the spark plugs made it better!?!

i would still take it back to them until the check engine light goes away... it never came on before you took it in to them for service, right?

Doh! take it back until it is fixed. They must repair the car if you paid for them to do so. Im sure if you talk to the service manager and tell him your story then he do the right thing. Unless they are complete crooks, which I have never heard about Team Honda.

The check engine light was on when I took the car to the dealer for repairs. I told them about that problem but the diag and repair was for the tapping sound which was caused by the timing chain. They have fixed that, so they are telling me I need to pay them an additional diagnose to check the engine light. I really wish they would have looked into this problem while they had the engine apart.

So, I'm still stuck with cylinders mis-firing and I'm not sure I can afford to take it back to the dealer. Anyone know what could cause the mis-fires if it's not the timing or the spark plugs??? One person I talked to said it could be a sensor that tells the engine how much air it get's at what rpms. I'm pretty clueless.

Thanks for all the help so far...
