Default Replacing Rotors - Caution

Replaced the rotors and pads today on the S (2005 Silverstone). The 2 rotor screws would not budge (80,000 miles), even with application of a large hammer and an impact screwdriver. Picked up a good drill bit at the parts store and drilled them out.

However, I choose a 1/4" bit, which is very close to the 6mm screw diameter, and the bit went all the way through the hub. Now I have one threaded hole and one "hole".

No worries, I will pick up a 6mm Heli-Coil and fix it this weekend. However, it will work just fine with one screw. The wheel holds the rotor in place anyway. All the GM cars I every worked on (including Corvettes) did not use any retainer on the rotor.

---

So if you have to drill out the retaining screws, be careful. Use something larger than a 6mm drill bit and go slowly. Once the head comes off, you can tap on the rotor from the rear and it will come off.

Replace with new screws and a bit of anti-sieze compound.

Dave

Same here. I never put those screws back on after I installed SoS Rotors.

Same here, but good advice nonetheless.

I have had to drill those screws out on a couple of vehicles. If you do it right you won't damage the threads. I got practice on drilling out rivets. Those screws are a pain- they are really soft. They are only there to hold the rotor still while putting the pads and caliper back on. Glad to hear you are not stressing about them and you seem like you already know what to do to fix it.

I never reinstall those screws. The wheel holds the rotor on.

I just dremeled the screw head into a large flathead, so I can use my large flathead to break it loose. With the addition of PB blaster and tapping with the hammer.
