Custom Numbered Door Sill Inserts - Place your order now

Hello fellow CR owners. The idea of having a custom/unique identifier (plate/plaque) for our beloved CR's has come up multiple times on these forums over the years. We usually are able to drum up interest, and have had some good discussions about what we all would want. Ultimately we have never been able to make progress and get anything made. We usually fall short when it comes to finding a vendor or person that has the ability to take on the custom project.

Here is a past thread about some ideas we all had: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/987...es-for-in-car/

The other day I saw a post that was made by a UK member about custom carbon fiber door sill inlays that he created for the 15th Anniversary of the S2000...which got me thinking these would be PERFECT for the CR. The UK member has agreed to help us out and create custom CR door sill inlays.

This thread is absolutely not a FOR SALE THREAD. This is also not for a business or for profit, just a couple S2000 owners trying to help each other out. I spoke with Mocky and cleared this post and its intent with him.

Definitely in on this! I also like the mock up you started with Adam. We can discuss if that's what we'd want the final version to look like, or if people have ideas for it to look a little different. Do we know if that member could help us out with this? In the past it seems that we've never had a lack of interest... just a lack of resources to help us get the job done.

Thanks I threw those together real quick based on what I was thinking. The final design will be dictated by us as a group, and the member that may be willing to produce these for us. We certainly have some flexibility design wise and ultimately it would be nice to nail down 2-3 designs and let the members here vote!

I am going to do my best to stay on top of this and make it happen.

Vanishing Point 07-23-2014 01:36 PM

Adam for clarification, are these going to be door sill inserts or completely new door sills? I would personally prefer the complete door sills with the insert, that would give everyone the option of retaining the OEM sill plates should one want too. And still have these new versions for special occasions or everyday use.

Good question. They will be inserts. It will be up to owners to either buy new sills (Garnsih) from Honda at roughly $280 for both, or to reuse the factory sills (garnish). This interest thread is strictly for the inserts and how people choose to use them is up to them.

I personally think I would replace the factory inserts with these carbon inserts. I would want to check into covering them with clear bra or something to protect them and leave them in the car full time.

Could we lay down some clear coat if they are CF so scuffs and marks can be polished out?

I don't know for sure yet, but it is something I will look into and discuss.

Using all the proper fonts, I think this is a spectacular idea.

What if we could get Uehara sans signature to be engraved into the plate?

I MAY be able to arrange this if interest is there, and I think he would love the idea.

#172CR 07-23-2014 06:17 PM

Damn! This looks awesome. Can you do custom 1 off plates?

The final design will use all of the S2000 and CR specific fonts.

The 15yr anniversary plates used Uehara sans signature and I want to do the same on the CR specific plates.

#172CR 07-23-2014 07:38 PM

Adam, instead of the years listed, would you consider changing it to the CR years? 2008-2009?

Did you look at my draft sketches? There are no years listed ;).

If owners want we could incorporate the years though...I will try to sketch up a couple different designs. Ultimately I want to do some design by committee and have a few solid designs to vote on.

DaleJH66 07-23-2014 08:15 PM

I'm interested. Suggestion, have the yellow lettering be the same color yellow as our seats.

Depending on the cost I might be interested.

Vanishing Point 07-24-2014 04:45 AM

I'll just say I'll wait for the final version before deciding. The thought of having to purchase four sets of new door sill's may have something to do with my apprehension.

FurY 07-24-2014 06:35 AM

As mentioned above(and it may be too early to know), I'd be interested to know a ballpark figure of what they will cost. Also I assume we'd be buying a pair of 2 with whatever the price is? I like where the design and ideas behind it are going so I'm in, just curious to know what we think they will cost.

One other question... do you know if we'll need to remove our OEM sills to put these in? Or will they fit flush over top of the existing OEM sill?

Ok, and buying four new sets of sills is not something you have to do, its something you may decide to do... ;)

I still think these have the potential to be pretty cool little keepsakes for the car, and even if they do not get installed, it would be neat to have!

If you have suggestions, or better ideas, please feel free to PM me!

goldenfri 07-24-2014 06:47 AM

Count me in, I already have some spare sills from another car. I think they are all the same.

Factory, or as close to factory yellow is the plan!

I put a cost estimate in the OP.

I put what I expect based on what I know so far as a ballpark estimate in the OP.

Yes the price is per pair.

I will work up a few more design ideas.

Yes the factory insert has to be removed. It is held on with a clip and a little bit of glue. From reading the original threads about these CF inserts it is very easy to remove the factory inserts and replace with the new CF ones. I will honestly strongly consider buying some BNIB sills to keep as spares and modify the ones currently on the car since they show some wear.

There is always the option to get these as a collectible and or maybe use it in the engine bay. I think you could nicely adhere it to the radiator support so it is front and center in the engine bay. It could also be mounted inside the trunk lid so when you pop your trunk it's there. Just throwing some ideas around...

The radiator support would be a great place for people who don't want to use the door sill location

Actually, I was thinking about the engine bay when I saw them, but my thought was to purchase three. Surely, that shouldn't be a problem - essentially, the plates are projected to cost $100 to $175 a piece. That sounds fair enough. I'm not worried about the extra sills - see no reason why I should ever sell this car.

How many orders are required to make this possible (or, how does the order count scale the cost)?

BTW, I love the additional photos of the original project. That looks fabulous. It's what the car deserves. Those photos also appear to contradict the statement that it replaces the sill insert - looks like it's attached to the insert's center.

I do not see why someone could not order as many as they wanted! I think I may want three now!

When we hit 20 people on the interest list, I will start having more detailed discussions about logistics, design, and pricing.

I have confirmed that yes the factory insert has to be removed. I have updated the first post with some new pictures. :)

FurY 07-25-2014 06:09 AM

Question regarding the clear coat or gloss that appears to be on the sill... is he using a similar clear coat as to what you see on CF hoods/trunks/etc?

The reason I ask is everyone I know who's had a CF part on their car, no matter how meticulously they've cared for it, the clear coat always starts to peel or fade over time. I realize these door sills will be protected from sun light and the elements for the most part, but I was thinking about doing something to clear/protect/seal the sill prior to installation. Since these are custom, one off sills, I want to make sure I protect it for a long time as best as I possibly can. I'm still thinking of ideas on how to protect/seal it up further than what the creator of these sills does... the new 3M spray on clear coat came to mind but whatever I do, I want to make sure it won't harm the sill and just protect it.

I'm probably being anal/over protective of it, but if I'm spending $200-350 on door sills, I want to make sure they stand the test of time.

Vanishing Point 07-25-2014 06:45 AM

Perhaps a better option for placement of the door sill plate inserts might be to offer them as a interior placard. This would negate the need for new or changing existing door sills, and give everyone the option to place these where they wish. These could be offered in two sizes, one for those changing out their door sill plates and another in a smaller size to use as a placard inside the CR. These would look identical, just two different sizes to appeal to more people.

These are all very good and valid questions. I have brought the issue up to the member that made them and he is looking into it further. This will be a topic that I stay on top of!

Obviously paying for a product like this we WANT it to be all encompassing and cover all the basics, but we might get to a point where we as owners might have to do more on our own to fully satisfy all of our wants/needs (speaking to how anal most of us are :)). Such as buying a second set of door sills/inserts, or possibly applying clear bra.

I think when the metal inserts are removed from the plastic garnish and the new Carbon Fiber inserts are installed it would be the perfect time to take these pieces and try to get clear bra installed. I think that with a very thin film it will fit into all the cracks and seams nicely and offer superior protection from scuffs, water, and etc. This would probably be very cheap to do, and be the best option of protection. If someone that has a spare set of sills laying around could go to a local clear bra installer and ask their opinion on applying a thin clear bra that would be most helpful.

I agree with Adam that no matter what the design aspects land up being with these placards, individual responsibility in positioning/protecting these will lie with us. The 3m spray or clear bra is the best option if the placed is placed in its intense location. If we have a smaller one, I might even see if I can fabricate something into the radio door.

There is the possibility of this becoming an option, but I want to see how far the original idea can go before introducing more options. I hope you can understand that. :)

As a follow up though, where are you thinking you would mount an interior placard? Please feel free to pm or email me to discuss further as I know you have a lot of good ideas.

Depending on the size of the finished product Adam, I can see one either on the console, just forward of the gearshift lever or affixed to the radio door. In either case I would use a non permanent adhesive from 3M to mount these so they can be removed at will.

Vanishing Point 07-25-2014 12:39 PM

Put me down for four sets of the door sill plates and four individual smaller versions, should they become a reality.

Depending on the size of the finished product Adam, I can see one either on the console, just forward of the gearshift lever or affixed to the radio door. In either case I would use a non permanent adhesive from 3M to mount these so they can be removed at will.
[/quote]

I will look into making a scaled down size that would fit the radio door. Perhaps there will be the opportunity to make Door Sill Inserts and Radio Door/Interior/Engine Bay scaled down versions of the same design. It will all depend on how large of a project the member is willing to take on. :tipwink:

Will do, thanks for showing interest. This project really needs the blessing and support from the biggest CR owner/supporter :hello:

Hopefully I'm no longer the biggest CR owner.... I've been on a diet. :)

Mchester 07-25-2014 06:17 PM

THAT title MIGHT be mine I'm afraid... LOL

Also, I didn't say it before but I'd be down for 2 sets of sill plates as well as 2 of the smaller ones as well. Unless they cost like $1000 apiece... https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/public/st...ult/tongue.gif

I'm soooo in, this would help distinguish just how rare our cars are, plus honda should have had a numbered plaque for the club racers to begin with -_-

Glad to see you on the forums more regularly now! I have added your name to the list.

When we hit 20 people on the interest list, I will start having more detailed discussions about logistics, design, and pricing.

I have confirmed that yes the factory insert has to be removed. I have updated the first post with some new pictures. :)

Of course, you realize that thanks to our CR fanatic in Texas, the interest list has already (effectively) reached 20 people. In fact, since you and I want 3, we're at 21 sets. So...get talking! :D

I can't imagine why any CR owner wouldn't want these. They look great and it's what the car deserves. Maybe, if there were numbered plaques in our CRs (as stock equipment), uninformed journalists wouldn't say that Honda made 1,400 of them. ;)

BTW, you can call me Kevin.

Kevin, thank you for crunching the numbers for me! HAHA.

My goal with this project is to get as many owners involved as possible as this is most likely a one time effort. I will move forward, albeit slowly though in hopes that more people sign up! Realistically I am not in a rush to get this done, and I think placing order towards the end of summer early fall is probably the path I want to go down, unless we go a week or two with no new owners signing up. Please help spread the word!

Mchester 07-29-2014 04:28 PM

Just looked at the list and you can add another set of the sill plate plaques for me.

Maybe my 1st post was unclear, but I'd want 2 sets of 2 (total of 4) sill plate plaques. Plus the 2 smaller ones.

Thanks!

Thank you very much for double checking the list!! I have since gone and updated it to show 2 sets, and 2 smaller ones. :tipwink:

I think you mean 1 pair of the large sills, and 1 smaller placard if its possible.

s2k4life_az 07-30-2014 08:33 AM

Yes.

jvf1 07-30-2014 09:55 AM

Awesome!
I have always wanted something like this.

Count me in for a set of the Door Sill Inserts plus 2 small plaques.

I'm interested but I'd wait to see the final design before jumping in with both feet

Plus I'm busy paying off credit cards and trying to buy a house so money is really tight.

Thanks everyone for your interest in this thread. I shall be posting a prototype in the coming few weeks so please bear with me. I have had a lot of excellent feedback in relation to my 15th Anniversary cill plates and I hope to offer a similarly excellent product that you will be happy to fit to your cars.

Hi folks

Here are some designs. Perhaps a poll could be started with a view to most popular design going into production?

It will take around 2-4 weeks to custom make around 20 sets. The pricing will be the same as my 10th anniversary edition cill plates - £140 GBP or £125 as a gift shipped by tracked mail worldwide.

Payment is required in advance and once received I will start production.

I am a well established member and a meets organiser for the UK S2000 owners club so please order with 100% confidence.

I would suggest that we have a poll and after 7 days the most popular design goes into production.

Thanks for your interest and for starting this thread :)

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

s2k4life_az 08-17-2014 09:21 AM

Thank for putting these together. All are nice designs but I like #2 (middle) the best. Reads well and looks OEM.

Thanks, indeed, and I agree. Something about #2 'feels' the best.

Vanishing Point 08-17-2014 11:20 AM

Another vote for number two. I'm leaning toward just getting the smaller plates now.

DaleJH66 08-17-2014 11:25 AM

I also like #2 the best.

I'm not sure I follow the large vs. small plate, maybe I missed that in the thread. And is the price mentioned for the large or small?
