OK minimum is about 11/16", largest is about 13/16".

7/8th is too deep, HOWEVER, now that I've looked at the true specs of that "7/8ths" speaker above, that's the total height, the mounting depth seems to be 19mm for a surface mount, which is 3/4" which fits smack in the middle of my measurements.

I should not, that my tape measure I'm using kinda sucks, so I could be off some too.

If you mount it lower in the hoop, you'll have more clearance.

I just plugged in the Altec Lansing for the first time, it sounds damn good considering.

Time to destroy it, pics soon

Well hit the first snag already. The altec lansing's are wired in series, stock is parallel. Of course, I let someone borrow my ohmmeter so I'm going to go buy a cheap one real quick if I can find one. If the altec shows 8ohms driven then the altec lansing idea is dead (it'd be 2ohm load on the HU, a bit much). If it shows 16 ohms.. rock on.

of course, the wiring for the stock speakers seems to be clipped in place somewhere, it doesn't move much. I don't want to disassemble the entire back half of the car (again) just remove the wiring from the harness plug to the speaker so I may have to clip the wires near the speakers.. I hate doing so.. but..

Why not get a regular tweeter and just flush mount them

BTW what are the dimensions of the speaker grille itself?

Why not tweeters? Well I'd rather have more than just highs coming from there, despite the challenge of doing so with a tiny driver. plus you can mount tweeters behind the grills no problem, it's finding a semi full range driver to fit that's hard... and it's not like I want bass out of these, just a higher quality sound in the same range as the stock setup, which puts out some mids below what tweeters generally do, although I guess I've never tried to run one with a really low xover setting either..

Some lessons learned..

Altec lansing ipod speakers seem to be 4ohm, and they will distort when hooked up to a CDA-9857 at volume 18 pretty damn nicely, sounded like ass. At lower volumes they actually sound better up top, but I mounted them free air, so mids and "lows" were sucking bad compared to the stock speakers. The stock speakers have a box around them for an enclosure, it seems to help. I also noticed how bad the altec speakers sounded after I broke one side apart, the open side sucked compared to the enclosed side. The tang band speakers may have the same problem.

At low, low power levels I think the altec's would be a better speaker when mounted in the stock enclosure (looks like drilling the glue holes might allow you to seperate them, swap speakers, then reglue), however they simply can't handle enough power.

The Altec speakers are less than 5/8's mounting depth, so they fit easily. They are likely the same depth as the OEM speakers because with a similar enclosure they would likely just fit. I'm tempted to take apart one of the stock enclosures but I don't really want to do that. I'd love to get a spare one to disassemble but that would require buying one from honda unless someone has one to donate to the cause.

IMO, the best solution is a 1.5"-2" speaker in a custom darkknight enclosure

Of course, john probably couldn't do it for an affordable price (not that he's crazy expensive, but diminishing returns might get hit REAL quick here).

If anyone wants the pics I took, I'll post em.

John: What measurements do you want? I'll take them either tomorrow or next week when I get back from so fla. I'm assuming you wanted the speaker cover plastic that fits in the roll hoop, not the size of the driver opening in the stock speaker enclosure, but wanted to make sure.. that opening isn't exactly square..

Dave,

Thanks for all the follow-up info. I think you're probably right about the lack of an enclosure being a problem for these 1" drivers. Not sure what would be involved in creating something for the Tang Bang. Though, if finding sufficient depth for one of these is a problem, do you think there is any 2" that would fit?

Did you find that the factory headrest speakers sounded significantly different (better) with the Alpine HU vs the stock unit?

What, if any, changes did you make for the front speakers?

Cheers,
Phil

I'm sure they sounded better with the alpine HU over the stock, just becuase the stock HU is horrible. I also have Alpine Type-S components up front and a small bass setup in the trunk.

Anyways, when I mentioned a 1.5-2" in a custom enclosure, it would be an enclosure that would snap into the rollhoop like normal, but would have to stick out from the front of it. With a good molded piece, it wouldn't be ugly, but may not work well if you put the seat back against the roll hoops already.

Two of the tang drivers aren't very expensive though so I may have to try them out eventually..

Yeah Dave if you can get me the outside measurements of the grille, I'll see what I can come up with.

Oh and if you can get me the part number on the back there I'll order a set and play with it.

You can find the speakers themselves (they are Pioneers BTW, TS-XXX printed on the enclosures and the majestic site confirms it) for $40 online, the grill covers are $5 or so (probably better to get them directly from honda for the list price of $7.20 each). I'll try to get the actual part numbers today... will try to measure them today also.
