2 questions...
1) Since installing my system(half done), there has been a winding noise coming from under the hood(i think thats where it comes from). It only happens during revs, mainly 2000-5000 rpm's. If its idle, no noise. It sounds like a leaf thats caught in a fan. I have installed so far...
Pioneer 8400 HU
Pioneer REV 6.5 fronts
Pioneer REV 5.25 components in the rear
Punch 160 for rears(rear tire area)
Punch 360 for fronts(rear tire area)
Wiring is on each side by the doors(2 RCAs on left side, Power on right side)
It didnt make that noise b4 installing the system, just afterwards. Any advice will be appreciated
2) I went to my local stereo shop about getting a custom box for the trunk for my JL 12w3 v2. They said that they would cut a piece of mdf board the whole size of my trunk, carpet it, seal the tool area off, and drop the sub in there. They said they didnt have enough room just to build a box. Although this solution would look nice, would it be a good way to go? I dont care about trunk space because its just a car to drive on nice days and i have another if i need to use the trunk. Any concerns about this method? They told me it would cost 125$, which sounds pretty d*mn good to me. Any comments?

But don't be fooled; Boxes *are* possible...it's tough to get lots of volume though
Here's are some dimensions of our trunk
And here are the three different box shapes that you could use
Go here for my whole writeup on the boxes

Note though that the volumes for the pentagon and trapezoid boxes are wrong because it wouldn't be possible to still use 1/2" MDF and still make it structurally sound...You'd need at least 3/4"
Trapezoid, you're looking at 0.80 cu ft internal volume and the pentagon, about 0.90 cu ft
Along the way, some pointed out that it would probably be easier to just go the fiberglass route so you could look into that but MDF worked for me
I'm using the final trapezoid on the page (Scroll way down) with 1 lb. of polyfill for a Dayton DSQ

You've been here for a week and a half and when two members get confused by something you said, you automatically assume *we're* the ones who have no idea what we're talking about?
Well damn, if car audio is so second nature to you that you can explain it in such condescending terms, I guess you don't really need anyone's help.

Regarding your question about boxes, an MDF box is pretty easy (and cheap) to make. I'm assuming that's what you were quoted on? The problem, as bomberman pointed out, is that you loose so much volume due to the tool area's curves. You really might want to consider making one out of fibreglass to take full advantage of the limited area.
I did mine that way and having never, ever worked w/ fibreglass before I can say that it really wasn't that hard. It was actually pretty easy, just long, tedious and messy. The total cost of materials (from a boat shop here, couldn't find a fibreglass specialty shop) was about $70 when you add in cloth, brushes, resin, etc. I basically bonded the shell to a flat 3/4" MDF top and it works great. Just remember, that curved fibreglass is very stiff, but flat areas have to be very thick to be stiff. You'll probably want some internal bracing to get extra stiffness, which works out well if you divide the chamber into two seperate areas as I did, because I had enough volume for two 8"s!

Fiberglass is the best bet. I was not that committed so I had my installer make a .6 cu ft box for the well for a JL 10W6 v2. It fits in the well and is easily removable. He could have made the enclosure larger, but this particular sub likes that airspace so that is what we went with.
I also thought about sealing off the well as an enclosure. I used to do that on '82 through '92 Camaros back in the day and it worked OK. But with so many subs working so well in low airspace now I think you're better off with a specific enclosure designed for that sub.
Good luck.
