im looking to get an alpine head unit for MY04. as of now, im thinking about a 9853 with the ipod adapter and satellite radio. 2 questions,

1) am i correct in saying that the only way to get dash controls with the alpine unit is to buy an additional harness?

2) anyone have any info on the 2006 models and what new features they will have that will make it worth waiting for (also, whaen will they hit stores)

1 - Buy a Modifry DCI (and wiring harness)- more functionality plus you can use it with other brands if need be later on.

2 - No.

how easy is the install of the modifry? ive seen the pdf manual online and have read some posts about soldering, etc... not really into getting involved in a complicated wiring installation. plus, all i like the dash controls for are mute and volume. any other options?

Hmmm... I am not too impressed with the 9857.... The display looks way smaller than the 9835/55... Gotta see it in person I guess

 

I'll be getting the 9857 for my LandRover. Alpine has a lot of new gear out this year! Some very cool stuff!

Looks like they removed the time correction, active xover, and parametric EQ (collectively known as Bass Engine Pro in Alpine-speak) from all the CD/MP3 units including the 9857. Now only the top of the line DVD headunits get those features while the rest of the line falls back to the entry level feature set.

Fine I guess for those who never used the active xover or time correction, because it helps make the units cheaper. But super lame for those folks who do use those features.

Also it appears that the term "full speed" is not quite accurate yet again. The demo indicates that you can use "percentage search" to skip thru long lists, "simulating the speed of the iPod" or something to that effect. Does not sound like they got around the limitation of slow serial data transfer from iPod to H/U. Nice that you don't need an interface box though.

They look nice, but I'm sitting on my 9833 for another year!

Yes they do. I called Alpine this afternoon and talked to them about it. It has 4 channel T.C. its just not on the site for some reason. I didn't go through them all with them though. Here's the specs for the 9857.
