Default Add cig lighter behind dash how-to?

Hi all, I've currently got an Alpine 9885 running my iPod on the full-speed cable, tucked into the net on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel. I just ordered the parts to add a 3.5mm aux in so I can hook up my Droid to the 9885 and play Pandora over the radio, and I'm going to mount the phone using the Modifry bracket+garmin ball+Moto dock just to the right of the stereo. Therefore, I don't want my car charger stretched from one end of the cabin to the other.

I want to simply add an extra outlet behind the dash so I can plug the car charger in, and run the power cable out to the dock next to the stereo.

Anyone have a good source for an extra power point, and some instructions for hardwiring it to the fusebox? Will just a regular rat shack power point do? Any special advice to avoid introducing noise into the system?

Why don't you just hardwire it to the fuse box? Run the wire right under the dash.

Well, I'd rather have an outlet because A) I don't want to dick too much with the car charger since Droids and Motos are notoriously fickle about the chargers, and B) I want the option to run other stuff off the outlet too, like my radar detector or Garmin.

Or did you mean hardwire the power outlet to the fusebox? In which case, yeah, that's exactly what I want to do, I just don't know how. I didn't know if there was a plug-and-play adaptor I should use to plug into the box, if there was a generally excepted spot on the fuseblock to wire to, or any other pitfalls. I'm kind of a tard when it comes to this electronicky stuff that isn't plug-and-play.

Somewhere there's a handy photo that shows you which dimple to use as a guide for drilling the hole. I found it much easier than attempting to measure it per the linked thread.

Note that for the AP2's your outlet is going to be very close to the passenger side pockets on the dash. I had to rotate mine to prevent part of it from getting stuck behind the pocket panel (cap is attached to the outlet and that's what was getting stuck).

Your RD isn't hardwired?

I wouldn't because I'd probably go through a number of different smartphones while I own my S. It's also handy to have a power outlet in the front rather than the stock location IMO.

2 things to keep in mind:

1) Be sure to fuse the 12v+ side with an adequate fuse

2) Decide if you want it to be ALWAYS ON or only when ignition is running or you'll drain the battery really fast.

Wiring is easy - just pick up a socket from Radio Shack and connect ground and pick the wiring source based on #2.

I had this done for both my other cars.....

I've got an Escort Solo 2, it's battery powered. So no.

Yeah, I got it all set, thanks guys. Wired it to the bottom plug, and then grounded it by the radio. I'll post some pictures when I get it all finished after the mounting hardware comes from Modifry.
