amp over gas tank or spare tire
I'm looking to add a small 4- or 5-channel amp (around 50w rms x 4), but am looking for a completely stealthy install without losing any trunk space or my spare...
I know a number of you have done this, and I'd love to hear what fits where, and how happy you are with the result, and any challenges you encountered, eg. "I had to install a custom liquid-nitrogen cooling system."
- what amp?
- above the gas tank, or inside the spare (or somewhere I haven't thought of)?
- difficult install?
- happy with sound and reliability?
Thanks!
FWIW, this is what I'm currently running
Nakamichi cd400 headunit
Nakamichi sp-c652 6.5" coaxs (front)
Polk dx4 4" coaxs (rear)

When I first had my system installed, I ran my MMATS 700x1 above the gas tank and my Audison on a custom mount in the corner of the trunk (visible). However, I decided I wanted something more stealth and wanted to have my trunk space, so I removed the spare and bought Jim's amp rack. I mounted both amps, and I love it!
The spare is useless. Get a can of Fix-a-flat or AAA for emergencies. It's not like the spare is useful (you can't use it on the rear, so you have to switch tires around if you get a flat).

Since you are installing rear speakers on rear panels, you will need to have both seats move up atleast 2" from the back panel, then there are enought room behind either seat to install a good sized amp.
I had the same Memphis 16-MC2004 4-channel amp 15 months ago under driver seat. It failed on me about 3 weeks ago.

I have a JL 300/4 mounted above my gas tank. It is a tight fit, so you have to put rubber feet under the amp to keep it from resting on the wires going into the tank. It has been in there for about a year with no overheating issues. I power MB Quart fronts and a JL Stealthbox with it. I have been very happy with the results, and the install is extremely stealth. If not for the Clarion head, you would never know the system was aftermarket.

Thanks you this info, I was able to do the same thing. I mounted a Hifonics Eagle amp 4x50 on top of the tank. I also used rubber feet to keep it from sliding around and to keep it cool. Amp dimensions 8W x 8L x 2H.
Has anyone had overheating issues? Or is there enough air movement to keeps the amps cool in this location?

I mounted my amp over the gas tank also with my rear x-overs in the empty spot by the left rear strut with room to spare for my towel wrapped tools.

I have an Xtant 403A 3-channel amp over the fuel tank and an Alpine MRV450 (???) 4-channel amp inside the spare tire.
My sub is in the cabin underneath the dash/steering column area, so I have lost no space to my audio install and it is virtually stealth. I really like having the entire trunk available for golf clubs and other stuff when necessary, plus I never wanted get rid of the spare tire.
If you do a search on "amp" and my name you should be able to pull up a couple posts with amp dimensions for those who want to go stealth. Many of the amps are no longer made but the dimensions could be used to compare with newer models.
