Default Anyone do a DIY roll hoop speaker setup?

My roll hoop plastic has already been removed, so the "seal" has been broken so to speak. I'm contemplating getting a used '07+ roll hoop setup w/ the speaker brackets vs. just doing a DIY install of some tweeters on my own.

Curious if anyone has done this and maybe has some pics / suggestions.

Thanks,

D

do you really need rear speakers? I can't even hear mine.

if your hoops were intact i would have suggested trying s-pods.

Also the speakers in the hoops are NOT tweaters they are small, yet full range speakers. I would suggest using s-pods because then you can get fuller sound rather than crappy small speakers.

I bought some eBay s pods and the fitment was terrible. I made so custom templates from 1/4" plywood and wrapped it in some vinyl faux leather. I mounted Kappa perfects with the tweeters. In each hoop
It filled the center hole and sounded amazing with the top back. I can give you more details if you want

And you don't notice any problems with stereo imaging in the rear speakers? I know tons of music that makes pretty essential use of both L/R channels (eg., the Beatles, Rolling Stones) that would get seriously distorted if I had a big L channel in back of my head and the passenger had a big R channel in back of theirs.

But it seems like people don't really mind this?

I used a 4 channel infinity amp and it fed all 4 kappas( two in doors and two in hoops). So I still had FR FL RR and RL channels. Didn't need a sub either. It was always clean and crisp with tight lows. I ran an Alpine Ida x305 also.

Actually it even looked factory almost. The vinyl looked just like the imprint of the plastic trim. Maybe cost $25 for raw material and you also need a hole saw. 5 inch if I recall.

I'd love to see some pics of your setup, including where you put that amp. I just upgraded my head unit and speakers today. Next will be the rears, which don't even exist yet. ;-)

The amp was too long to mount on its side and stillness able to access the spare tire compartment. I ended up mounting it in my emergency tool compartment, where the Jack and stuff went. I carved a bit out of the black foam and mounted it in that well. The tire stuff I put on rags and set inside the spare tire. I'll have to look for my pics. I mounted the crossovers under the amp.
The only trick is you use sootiest to make a loop through some holes in the back and front plates. The you upholster them. Now you have little loops on each, you set them in place and from the speaker holes you reach inside and zip the two together. The compression between them, squeezing your roll hoop, makes them stay.
As for the shape, because of the subtle contours of the hoop trim all I can say is make a basic u shape with a flat bottom and then test fit it and trim
Trial and error really. Remember that each side is a mirror of the other. You cannot use the same piece for each side exactly. The arch is asymmetrical. Imagine the saint Louis arch, but with the apex a little offset. Then the mirror opposite is the other sides front.
