Default AP1 tail light issue

Hey guys, i realized that on my 02 S2000 something weird is going on with the tail lights.

when i turn on the lights the tail light only has the small bulb on the side go on. is the main light (big red) not supposed to light up too? when i step on the brake it lights up but i thought its supposed to be dimly lit with lights on.

both sides are affected by this. i inspected all bulbs and everything appears to be in working condition there.
maybe i am just imagining things but i sure would appreciate some insights if anyone knows.

thanks.

This may seem like a totally obvious question, but are your headlights on as well?

Bulbs are like 6 dollars. Ap1 tails have 7443 bulbs i think. Start small. Replace your bulbs and go from there.

Its a dual filament bulb. One can be good while the other is toast.

appears the previous owner put a single filament bulb in there. i just installed the 7443 and of course that took care of things.
