audio dash control problems
I seem to have problems with my dash controls....when i press the channel button sometimes the volume would go up, sometimes it wont change the channel, and my volume button would occasionally not work either...
anyone know what i can do?
anyone know what i can do?
Ok, well I'm fairly new to surfing this area and I'm going to assume that you've searched and this issue hasn't been covered and start taking guesses as to what it could be. (If other people have had this issue then it may already be discovered, might want to run a quick search if you havn't already).
It's my understanding that the buttons (other than the MUTE) are just resistors on the same wire, and that the radio (or Modifry unit) just measures the voltage (variable by resistivity) on that wire to know which button is being pressed. So that gives you 3 possible parts that could be the issue.
1. The switches themselves
2. The wire
3. The radio
What I would probably do is find the wire that the signal is sent over (I think it's a GRN/RED one out of the factory harness...) and use a multimeter to read the voltage across that wire when each button is pressed and compare it to the values given to us by modifry. That will check both 1 and 2 at the same time.
If the problem is not there, then it's probably the radio, and you may post on your local forum to see if anybody has a stock radio you can throw in there to test it with (or offer them a few bucks to buy it).
If the problem does show up when you test the voltage then you could test the resistivity of each button individually and compare it to the chart, and that will tell you if it's the buttons or the wire. Oh and also check the voltage coming into the switches to make sure the problem isn't the power into the switches.
Hope that helps.

NP, looks like it's time to bust out the multi-meter.
If that stuff doesn't make sense to you then just post in your local area and there's probably a few people that wouldn't mind helping you out.
Here I'll even give you some instructions for that:
1. Post subject: "FREE BEER (need help)"
2. Offer to bring a 6/12/24 pack to somebody's house if they can help you fix (or at least definatively diagnose your problem)
3. Drive over and setup lawn chairs and cooler in the shade.
4. Fix car
5. Sit in lawn chairs while grabbing cold ones from cooler while feeling good about yourselves thinking how superior you are to all the suckers that take their car into the shop and pay for what could have bought them a keg... and they didn't even get to drink!
I recomend not getting the order of 4 and 5 mixed up. Know your limits, don't drink and drive.
