Default Best MP3 Headunit for under $250?

Well, after my recent component speaker & sub upgrades. I can really hear the weekness in the stock headunit coupled with line-level converter. So now I'm willing to shell out a little more cash for a head unit along with PAC-x from Lucid to interface with the dash controls. Since the PAC-x cost about $100. I'm setting my budget at $250 for the cd/mp3 headunit. Plan to make this a DIY project with Lucid's excellent illustrated instructions. I don't really have a brand preference except no SONY. I had one of their Mobile ES units before and while the CD performed well, their radio reception really sucks. I've never done a install before so please keep the ease of PAC-x interfacing in mind when you recommend a product.

Thanks All

You can buy a Sony MP30, which is what I have, and the Sony DCI, all for less than $250.00. The sound is great, it plays MP3s and it's fairly inexpensive. You'll want new door speakers, though, as the stock ones sound like crap, especially with a better than OEM HU!

Get a used Alpine 7894 or get a new Alpine 9807. I personally do not recommend the Sony, I've heard cheap older Alpines played back to back against a new Sony "high end" HU and the Alpine was SO much better.

BTW I had a Sony CDX-MP70 for three months and sold it for an Alpine 9815, I am MUCH happier.

There's some kind of factory clearance on Sony CDX-MP40s going on. You can see auctions on eBay right now for as low as $112.99. I picked up one from www.MillionBuy.com through eBay for $114.95 (better shipping price). MP3 capability, plus a wired remote input so they should be compatible with the Sony DCI from www.lucidautomotive.com.

When at freeway speeds the vocals gets droned out a bit with my current set up. Stock HU, Compoents, amp, sub. Will the Alpine 9807 cure that? I'm leaning toward this unit because of prior experience w/ alpine, looks, features, & price.

Thanks
