[QUOTE=forpointsex,May 5 2005, 08:50 PM] The X50 does not detect stealth mode lidar or good at detecting instant on.

I got my original passport a few years ago from future shop(best buy wannabe) for $220 us($300cdn) and bought the additional extended three year warranty. Got sick of it after two years and traded it in for the X50(their warranty is over the counter trade)... So in all, buy the extended warranty and trade it in when the next model comes out...

as a point of curiousity -- since you know so many folks who have detectors, i'd be interested to hear how a real life comparison works out...

I live a mile away from a Pennsylvania State Police Barracks. I have both of the top models discussed here...an 8500 X50 and a V1. Since many of the troopers tend to stay within a certain mile radius of the barracks while hunting for speeders, I have a unique situation in which to test both models.

One evening, I passed a trooper settling into a nice hiding spot along the highway. I decided to double back and switch both detectors on. When I arrived at the troopers location, both detectors came on "at the same time!." Since I knew the trooper's exact spot (he was hidden very well...no way to see him from the highway), I was traveling the speed limit. Good thing, because both detectors activated to late. Neither alarm sounded until I was right next to him. Way too late to slow down. I'm sure this was due to the fact that he just got into position and wasn't emitting radar for very long. Or, he was using a type of "instant on" radar. Either way, if I didn't know he was there and put faith into either detector, I would have been nailed!!! BTW...PA doesn't use Laser yet, just K and KA band Radar.

Bottom Line: Just because you buy the best radar detector doesn't guarantee you won't get a speeding ticket. Troopers can be sneaky!

That's the most concrete info I have read so far.

[QUOTE=rworne,Mar 29 2005, 02:04 PM]The Escort SRX, where you put sensors in the bumpers and a small control panel in the car, is supposed to be as good if not better than the 8500.

suprfunguy:

interesting... was the cop shooting head on or from the side? also, not surprising to see the X50 and V1 w/ the same range/detection. all the tests show them to be VERY comparable for sensitivity... i think it really does come down to the arrows... *shrug*

sandelkw:
SWS was lost? that is news to me... then again, i cannot remember EVER getting an SWS alert anyway... so, no real loss i guess.

what DOES concern me is if i turn off POP mode, i lose sensitivity?? that just doesn't seem right, especially if the extra sensitivity is gained via the use of the larger antenna! turning off POP mode doesn't reduce the physical antenna size.
also, i find that hard to believe since the X50 ships w/ POP mode disabled by default!
then that would mean they are DELIBERATELY reducing the X50's sensitivity when it arrived to you new in the box. unless they are simply referring to the fact that you won't detect POP, and are therefore detecting less, which is less sensitive.
however, i'll readily agree -- having POP mode on drastically increased falsing.
my experience was that the X50 gave me a slight, but noticable improvement in range (regardless of POP being on or off). this could be a butt dyno type thing though, as it was subjectively judged.

Is the V1 sold at any retail stores? or am I just limited to the internet?
