I did radar detector research not too long ago,and if you are willing to spend the cash on the best, there are basically two choices, the escort 8500 (latest version) or the valentine one. I chose the escort because it had features I wanted but both are excellent w.r.t. range/detection. Some will argue one reads farther than the other but the reality is that both read well far enough ahead that you dont have a problem slowing down in time. I'm really happy with the 8500 and would definitely buy it again. Notable features that I like are the auto silence function, x-band detection bypass (no xband cops here) and when its on you can change the screen to be only a single pixel, which is great for night driving. Save some money. grab the 8500. On a messageboard I was a part of, I got in on a group buy for the 8500 and saved a bundle. Someone should start one here.

[QUOTE=PJK3,May 4 2005, 04:32 PM]before you say you'll never own a wired detector again -- you really should do a bit of investigation...

I have the Escort SRX, and in my opinion, its the ONLY way to go in the s2000. Hardwired in, and can be hidden behind the radio door. Plus, has laser shifter function. Trust me, the laser detectors (8500, V1) are useless in protecting you from laser speed finders. Thats why I now have the SRX.

What some people are not taking into account is this.

The people that do have these SRX systems installed have already owned a V1 or 8500 and looked (for whatever reason) for something else.

MANY MANY of the people saying the V1 or 8500 are working best, have never owned or even seen a SRX system work.

In my case both an older passport model, V1, 8500(blue) have been taken out, sold and replaced with the SRX.

As I've said in previous posts, I've been running detectors since the original Escort days (late 70's) and the fellow that said 'It's about learning to read them', really had the right idea.

What maybe right for one person isn't really right for another.

IMO with having owned and operated all of these units being discussed...

SRX hands down. These systems offer unprecedented defense, detection to anything I've owned.

And to address the arrow/bogee counter thing.

Read about cosine effect's of police radar, you'll see that arrows although neat.. Are not as important to see where...

But how many... And WHAT it is that's causing the alert.

The SRX systems can track 3 X - 3 K - 3 Ka targets all at the same time and display this information to you, while still watching and being able to block/defend a laser hit.

And it does it really really well. Better than anything I've owned.

[QUOTE=ddh10,May 5 2005, 01:40 AM] Yeah, I've read the tests and I hear what you're saying. I work in a department where every other person, eight people, has a detector of some kind. Most have the 8500, a couple of Bells and a Valentine. I have the only Solo. Everyone is happy with their detector except for a couple of older detectors in the shop that aren't gettin' it any more.

I like not being tied to a tether and I have been getting more than enough warning in order to lift and glide by. If I ever think that the Solo is compromising my protection, I'll dump it in a second. Until then, I love this compact little squawker.

I run it in auto-Ka/laser with volume maxed.

PJK3,
Thanks for the heads-up. If this Solo ever has me worried or fails to warn me in time, it's going for a ride down the river while on my way to buy a different detector.

as a point of curiousity -- since you know so many folks who have detectors, i'd be interested to hear how a real life comparison works out... yall ever go on group drives?

[QUOTE=PJK3,May 5 2005, 08:52 AM] my favorite feature of the 8500 is the expert mode, as i can be very detailed w/ my analysis of the situation.

The X50 does not detect stealth mode lidar or good at detecting instant on. V1 detects everything, but falses a lot on K band. V1 is the best for highway, x50 for the city.

Here's some testing videos: http://www.laserjammer.citymax.com/p...ge/1904719.htm

is the x50 upgrade from the 8500 worth it?
