Default Boston Pro60s or Focal Polyglass

I know that speakers are completely subjective, but I have listened to both sets (in a speaker wall) and like them both, they are similarily priced.

Boston is tempting due to the more configuriable X-over, but I think the Focal may have a better range for different music types. I listen mostly to Rock and Top 40, with the ocasional dash of Techno when I am in the mood.

Wondering if anyone has experienced them in car and what they think. I really hate demoing speakers out of car, they just never perform the same, even with a heavily dynamatted door.

My current set-up is Alpine Type X 5.25" Bi-amped on a JL 300/4 they were too good a deal to pass up, but they are a little lacking at 80 MPH with the top down.

Thanks,
Paul

I have the Boston Pro 60s in my car now and they sound absolutely amazing. I'm powering them with the JL 300/2. These speakers have no hint of distortion even with the volume cranked all the way up. The highs can be truly be deafening so I had to toned them down a bit. The lows are so great that I doubt you'll even need a subwoofer (I added a JL 10w6v2 just cuz I like that thump )

I haven't heard the Focals yet so no basis for comparison there.

I find it wierd that your type-xs' are lacking at 80... Why not give them more juice?
Don't get me wrong, both the BA's and the Focals are great but the Alpines are a very nice speaker. I've had 2 sets 177a's in the front and 137a's in the back and they have never disappointed, even well above 80.

What part don't you like about the way they sound? Beside not being loud enough, I mean.
Have you thought about picking up the 6.5 set?

I have the 6.5 in the doors and the 5.25's in the rear panels and its so loud you need to turn it down. I only have them powered from an Alpine MRV-F340 which is a lousy 85watts x 4 (actual test numbers from Alpine not the box side rated numbers which are 55w x 4)

If your looking to get a different brand for whatever the reason, I tend to like the sound of the Focals myself.

John - It may not be a bad idea to do the Type X up front and Back, it would probably give me the sound I am looking for and increase the volume enough to satisfy my needs. The only reason I haven't considered it is becase I haven't been able to find a local place to demo them to hear the differences between the 5.25s and 6.5s. The place I bought the 5.25s has quit carrying high end speakers due to lack of sales.

Maybe I will have to try harder to find some place to demo them.

Thanks
Paul

I have the Boston Pro 6's in my S. Powered by an Alpine PDX 4.150 bi amped. That's 150 rms to each speaker (read tweeter and woofers powered seperately) . Loud and crystal clear. Like Focal as well, had a set when I lived in Key West and they kept warping from the heat. Sounded wonderful though when they were linear.

I have the Pro60 fed with ~150w

I have not listened to many different speakers, so i cant make comparative judgment.

However, I do not think they merit the 600$ MSRP. (I paid 300$ and do not think theyre worth that, either... perhaps 225$)

The highs are a little piercing... a bit too much "in your face". I don't think their power handling range is that great, either.. the woofer by physical limitation starts to give up when playing low notes at volume.. (I've powered them bridged so they have gotten tons of power).. so I dont think they'll play to "deafening" levels as described above

Anyways, theyre good speakers , but not OMFGreat speakers
