I say attach a relay to the same circuit as the door unlock and use the relay to trigger the car into acc/on, that way when you unlock the doors the car turns on, then sit down and push the start button. Then do the same with the door lock circuit to shut it down. You could also install a kill switch somewhere to shut it down too. Should be pretty cheap too, just some relays and mabey a solenoid or two Hmm, mabey I will do this.

Or even the "acc" to the driver door, and "on" to the passenger door. That way one push of the unlock button puts you into acc, and two pushes turns it on.
I like the sound of that, I had toyed with that method as well.

Thank you guys for all of the responses!

What I was thinking of is hooking a timer ic to the button and use some sort of logic for the following

If Key Press < 5 Seconds Then
If Car off Then
Turn Car On
Else
Turn Acc On
End If
Else
Start Car (which I would assume mean, Turn Car on, Turn Acc, then starter)
End If

The whole problem really with all of this is my complete ignorince with embedded electronics. As revhi said, I know it's possible, it's just learning how to do it.

In regards to steering wheel lock, the oem systems would still be in place (with exception of the starter button execution 'plan') so if the wheel was locked, the key cylinder would still be there could I not just stick the key in and unlock the wheel?

Also, what's y'all opinions on the above mentioned plan?

Wait, I think we are going deeper than what you really want. If you dont care about actually using the key to unlock the wheel before you drive away, just link a remote start system to the car. I have it done on mine. The new remote will start the car of course, but I had a valet switch added under the dash that I can tap once to turn on or off the car without the key. I use it for turbo timer purposes so I dont have to fumble around with the remote. You can use the same output from the remote start brain and relay it from the start button as mentioned by someone all ready. Only downfall I see is that you will be bypassing the clutch to start. In reality, its just like starting your car normally, but backwards. You hit the start button before inserting the key instead of inserting the key and than hitting the start button.

Oh wait, wait, wait revhi I think I might have misunderstood above.

So, the wheel would lock every time I turn it if the key isn't in the ignition? If so then you guys were right, that'd have to be bypassed as well. How would you do that? Is there a relay that's passed voltage when the key is inserted to on and that disengages the lock?

It may help for me to fully explain from start to finish what my goal(s) are.

What'd I'd like to have happen:
1. Have a small "key fob" that has a transmitter in it. When I'm within about 10 ft of the car, have that fob talk to a receiver located inside the car.
2. If I am within that 10 ft, it should allow the use of a button located underneath each door handle. This button would be connected to the door locks. So, assuming the fob is within 10ft, if you pushed one of the buttons once, it would unlock that door, if you pushed it twice it would open the second door - Or - I push my button for the driver door and the passenger pushes his/her button for their door.
If the fob is not within 10ft though, neither button would be operational.
3. Once inside the car (or technically if I am within 10 ft) I would like to be able to
a) Turn the car onto on with 1 push of the start button
b) Turn the car to acc with 2 pushes of the start button
c)Start the car by holding the start button for 5 seconds (and consequently drive off)

If the car is started i would like to push the start button once to turn it off, if it is in "on" then I would have to push the start button twice to turn it off and if it is "acc" then push the start button once turn it off.

To lock the car, I want it to automatically lock upon the fob leaving the 10ft zone.

So hopefully that gives an overview of start to finish how I'm hoping all of this will work. Any suggestions for the key fob approach would be welcomed as well (I'm still researching that and due to my lack of knowledge am kinda hitting a dead end there)

Thank you, Thank you in advance!!

So you want a proximity sensing key. Still not impossible, but not worth it. Your going to spend a ton trying to make it work. Bypassing the immobilizer and permanently unlocking the steering wheel is nothing compared to trying to add a prox sensing system and integrating it to the existing keyless and ign system.

Really? What about it is causes the extreme difficulty?

The reason for my asking is I've found some solutions for proximity house keys and to me the premise seems identical, just now it's in a car's application.

##If worse comes to worse though, and the proximity key just isn't possible then I'd still totally like to start the car directly from the start button (i.e. disengage immobilzer and the steering lock) so that is possible? Is it possible/easy to have the start button be multi function operated like mentioned above? (i.e. the one button, two button, 5 second push)?

Yeah exactly.

Pops just bought an M45 and used it, and the R&D is perfection...they nailed efficiency, simplicity, and sexiness...they've got it down and if I could accomplish even 1/4 of that I'd be thrilled!

my cousin just got a new Altima and other then the fact that the I4 in that car just doesn't seem to cut it for me.
the Start button is amazing and SO convenient, he just leaves the key in his pocket all the time, walks up to the door presses a small button, sits down presses the break and starts it up.

im looking into getting a '03 MB SL500 and im pretty sure those cars have something called KeylessGo or something like that.

Why dont you ghetto rig it?

Pull out lock cylinder, stick key inside it, put it on to 'start'. Hide it somewhere below your dash, put a switch in line on the 'hot' wire to a switch. Flip the switch, press the start button.

am i missing something here?
