Alpine is probably the most popular brand around here, and while some people will claim they arn't unique enough, its unlikely anyone will be disappointed by the quality. One of the features that the Alpines offer that you may like is a speaker distance calibration that allows you to adjust the outputs do compensate for the varying distances your speakers are from your ears.

Other things to consider:

Aesthetics (obviously)

Making sure you have RCA pre-outs (preferably at least 2), so no Best Buy 49.99 specials.

A separate sub output can be useful if you're going to add one later.

Not buying Sony.

Hi I would go with MP3 in the player unless you have an Ipod or equiv. but then you don't need a CD changer anyway.
