Default Clicking sound when ejecting CD-stock head unit

So I think my stock 2004 head unit is about to die on me. When I go to eject a cd or put a new one in it makes a clicking sound.
When ejecting the cd it comes out about an 1/8" and then just clicks away, and I think it said error.
When putting it back in, it went in with about 1/8" was showing. I pushed it in with me finger, (finger was inside the slot. it finally took the disc.) and the disc plays fine.
So what are my options. Is it just a bad ejector motor? Is it fixable?
My options:
Buy $120 head unit (after market). And fork over the $100 for the modifry dash controls. Does crutchfield or someone sell one cheaper?
Or spend $100 and connect an ipod cable to my stock HU, and just don't use the cd player.

So it sucks, has worked fine for my two years of owner ship. Shot the cd in like a rocket normally.

What would you do? Can I fix it my self?

You are lucky that the CD sticks out at all. My CD player just clicks and the CD stays stuck in the player. The CD plays fine, it just won't come out!!! Am trying to devise a way to get the CD out. Googling the topic results in finding out that a few others have had the same problem with the original radio/CD unit. No real solution other than replacing the head unit. Since I also installed the XM radio kit its not a deal if I can't play CDs while out of normal AM/FM radio station range ... just would like to get the CD out! Suspect sooner or later you will have the same problem ... next time it kicks out the CD enough for you to grab it ... do it and don't put it back in! Guess I would have to look for a rebuilt/repaired original head unit if I want to retain my XM radio capability, and not have to rewire the car for a different XM radio setup.
