This is a pretty good list to start from.
LoL...to start from? Where would you go from there? Custom made, one off speakers?

Same brands but higher end in the lines. 10k components?

Looks like your wants were exactly like mine. I ended up with the iDA-x100. Your best bet is to just go to the store and listen to which ones sound the best to you. I picked up a set of these after listening to them in the store:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1086020CS/Inf...0cs.html?tp=106

They sounded better and clearer than most of the 3-way and higher powered speakers. I did have to make myself a custom attachment bracket (I didn't want to modify the stock one), but it wasn't terrible. All in all install took me probably 3 hours with the custom fab.

Coupled with the x100, I personally don't think you'll be disappointed with the 6020cs.

We just installed a set of Infinity Reference 5 1/4" components in my friend's S and the sound blows me away. Excellent range and clarity powered off the deck.

A Canadian store, but just for you to see:

Easy to install the tweeters in the factory mounts, speakers are shallow enough and come with adapter rings that fit the S so you don't have to cut up your factory rings, and I'm just overall very impressed.

Rainbow Platinum? Handmade in Germany ftw!

edit to correct the Rainbow line...Utopias are top end Focal speakers.

As NS and I have suggested, the best doesn't necessarily suit your need. I'd recommend you go listening to some different brands first rather than going by hearsay. What might be sufficient for some of us may be overkill for you. Pull up some of the brands NS listed and find a local authorized dealer in your city. Then call and see if you can get a demo of course with a CD of your choice music.

Make sure you use the same CD, same track, same HU, and same amplifier (if you can) to listen to the speakers - the HU and amplifier can make a HUGE difference in the sound you hear. Isolate as much as you can to the speakers making the difference

I personally like the way Polk DB6501 sounds, but at the same time we all have different hearing. Prior to the polk I had the Sony xplod for a month, and Pioneer for a 2 weeks then switch to Polk.

I've never heard of speakers blowing for being UNDER powered... They just won't perform as well as properly powered speakers...

Speakers blow for one of two reasons:

1) Overpower - the speaker can't handle the heat or the voice coil bottoms out.

2) Mechanical failure - i.e. something resting on your woofer cone that affects the movement of the voice coil or a tear in the surround, etc.
Don't forget distortion and trying to produce notes that are out of a speaker's range. Melted voice coils FTL.
