Convertible switch conflicts with dome light help!
first of all, Yes! I did use the search buttom.
Anyway, I have my 01 s2k for about a month now, and I just recently ran into this electronic problem. When I first got it, the dome light didnt come on whenever I disarm the alarm (switch is in middle position). My convertible switch worked like a charm.
Then, all of the sudden, the dome light started working out of nowhere, but the convertible switch stopped working for no reason. whenever I try to put the top down, I wont ever hear anything. If I put the dome light to OFF position and drive around for a little bit, then convertible switch will work again. But, dome light will not light up no matter what position I put it on.
What do you think the problem is?? shortage in wire? loose wire? where do I start chasing the wires? anyone experienced it before? thanks guys

Sounds like someone has already been into the wiring on that S... I don't think the dome light and the convertible circuits have anything to do with each other....
My guess is that they are two unrelated issues for now that are just coincidental. Check the grounding connections inside the dome light as well as the door-switch connection. That should solve that issue.
As far as the convertible top not working, I am not sure how that circuit is wired... I have never had to screw with it. No noise = no power (as opposed to a weak battery that would just try and fail). Do you have a multi-meter? I would check voltage in and out of the switch (assuming its a switched positive).

I believe around 13.9 w ignition on... Could someone else confirm that the convertible circuit is indeed a switched POSITIVE? Need to know this ahead of time...

Roof switch sends +12v to the Conv Top Module.
Could be independant issues since the dome lights have a history of being flaky, but... humor me - When the convertible top is on the fritz, do the windows work or not?
One more question - when the ignition is FIRST turned off, can you operate the windows or top?

okay I took the dome light assembly apart today and found a lot of white residues on switch moving circuit (inside after taking out two small Philip head screws). I cleaned it up nicely with rubbing alcohol. after putting everything back together, both functions seem to work quite well. 24 hours had gone by, I do NOT see any conflict yet.
MODIFY, during the period of top switch non-functioning time, both windows were working properly.
I believe that I've solved dome light problem, but I have the feeling top switch might come back. *crossing my fingers*

^ Probably not. These are most likely two independent issues that coincidentally popped up at the same time. Like Modifry said, the dome lights are finiky (that is why I SMASHED mine and made these!
).

I would first measure the voltage at the head end of the switch (it should read constant hot). When the switch is flipped it should sent the 12V + to either side of the electronic motor (not sure if the motor is a 2-speed transmission type with a "forward" and "reverse" gear or if it simply runs off reverse polarity). In either case, when the switch is depressed, you should get 12V + on the other side as well (running to the motor). If you have power coming OUT of the switch, check power running INTO the motor. If you have power there, chances are you need a new motor. When you get to this point, run the troubleshoot from the link provided.
