Heres another option-

I have him make a custom sub box out of the trunk well, and place a 10 in there. Then I have him make two panels in each corner for the cap and the distribution center. Then I could either place the amp around the spare tire or just take it out all together, I do have AAA and a can of Fix a Flat.

I dont see this being a whole lot more and I could sell my e8a/wlaurent box combo to offset the cost.

Philip, are there any 10s that my Xtant could power?

Thanks everyone.

Caps of that massive size (Alumapro makes a 50 Farad one) are really for these monster muti amp systems you see in show vans, cars etc

My Sub amp has a built in fan, my front soundstage does not...and I have them flush mounted on a false wall. They have never overheated! (now that I said that!)

Now you're thinkin'! Get rid of the big rubber donut lookin' thing. Get Pas2knut's amp stand, put a sub in the tool well and you've got a great set-up that gives you enough space for a golf bag, or clothes for two on a weekend get-a-way.

Ahhhhhh weekend get-aways!

which reminds me it's like 80 degrees here and sunny, just ran an errand in the S. I have no complaints running errands 2day!

Amen, its a beautiful day out in sunny Florida.

I think this idea will prove to be more bling and more pleasing in the end.

Now, to choose a sub...

My Xtant is rated at 200w x 1 bridged, but Philip said it was underrated, so we want something in that ball park. I think I want to stick with a 10, I dont want anything obscenely loud, and I want to keep it very musical. I had a JL 12w6 in my last car and loved it, it was a great sub, so I might go with JL again. Everyone seems to like the Type-R series Alpine's, so I may consider them.

Any other ideas?

Ohh yes, another question...Do subs create rattles, or just accentuate them? For instance, if I get a 10, and run it for 3 months, when driving with the system OFF, will I hear rattles that I have never heard before?

Rattles when the sub hits are one thing, but I dont want it creating them in every day driving.

i'm sure there are.... let's go shopping!!

if nothing else, the e8a and WLaurent's box seem to be a common combo here... (i wonder why? ) so, you shouldn't have problems selling it for close to what you paid... especially with their current backorder situation.

looks like you've got 200 Wrms @ 2 ohms (rated, probably way more - did you get a birth sheet? i forget.) so, we'll be looking for subs that perform well at 250-350 Wrms that can be wired for 2 ohms total load.

if you wanted to stick w/ the Elemental Designs gear, the e10K.44 and e10O.44 options are solid. (both wired to 2 ohm total loads)

if you went with the O though, you'd want to plan on an enclosure closer to a 1.0 to 1.2 cu.ft.. for the K you could get away with an enclosure closer to a .5 to .85 cu.ft..

you could do the JL Audio 10W3v2 or possibly the JL 10W6v2 (it might need a bit more power than you have.), both of which in a dual 4 ohm voice coil setup.

other options for a 10" would be the Eclipse 10" 87101 DVC subs...

possibly a Infinity KAPPA 100.3DVC ...

perhaps Dave or someone else will have other suggestions...

I know the e8a is a great setup and it has served me well, but it just doesn't mesh well with my new ideas.

I like the JL and Infinity. What about a Kicker Solo Baric L5 or something? I think that would be pretty cool, but the RMS on those is pretty high.

Can anyone reccomend the Infinity over the JL or vice versa?

From infinitecaraudio.com-

1) Soundstream Cap
1) Infinity Kappa 100.3 DVC Sub
1) Soundstream Powerplant

=289 plus shipping

Which would leave me another 300 for the installation, which should be more than enough. Plus whatever I can sell my e8a setup for. Doesnt seem like a bad deal.

Kicker's Solobaric series has really changed from it's original designs... they are almost 100% SPL type speakers... (sound pressure level - used to refer to the folks who compete in boom competitions). the solobarics are not a musical sub at all. you'll get loud volume, but not much else... *BOOM* *BOOM* *BOOM* *BOOM*
this coming from a previous Solobaric owner... but from back in the day (1st generation) when they were targeted at being a small box SQ sub.

(and i understand about the e8a. i love mine, but it's just a sub... if i could convince myself (and wife) to live w/o the spare -- i'd be moving to a 10" or 12" as well... deep down inside, i really do enjoy being able to throw in a 'Monsters of BASS' CD every so often, and shake the piss out of everything around me... but for now, i need the spare since i daily drive the S. perhaps when i get a 2nd set of wheels, i'll ditch the spare.)
