I would say go with Eclipse...but you severely limited yourself when you said you don't want a motorized or flip down face.

There aren't many HU's worth having that don't have one of those features (unless you want the McIntosh designed Kenwood that retails for approx $750 used).

you can get plenty with what you are willing to pay, so you have options. I am running a JVC and redrilled holes for the brackets so I could close the door.

would the KDC X592 fit wiht the door closed?
I just bought it from Crutchfield. It arrives next Thursday and I will install it over the weekend. I can let you know then if the radio door closes.

Crutchfield thought it did but could not verify.

i was told it didnt but i was also told that you install s2000 decks th same way nissan/toyota do without that little cage so you can redrill the brackets to set the deck deeper in the dash which rules.

if i keep my s2000 im defenitely gonna get this.

Well I told Crutchfield that it's coming back if it doesn't. I actually saw it in person a while ago and I got to think the door will still close. The knobs on the stock system look to stick out more.

Avoid Premier (pannasonic) they sound good but not very user friendly. Im looking for an eclipse to replace my Premier POS.

Premier is Pioneer's high-end brand. Not sure why you're ragging on them, it's pretty nice stuff.

To the OP: there is a lot of clearance between the head unit and door, actually. Unless your radio has knobs that stick out 2 or 3", you'll be okay.
