Elemental Designs e8A.44 update
well how much space are you saving by going to one amp? that memphis 500d is not that big so i would stick with that. the e8a can handle 500watts so even with the gains set correctly i wouldn't worry about it.
though it will sound fine with 300 too, so you have enough power with either.
are you just trying to clean up your install? don't get me wrong, i'm all for spending more money on car stereo stuff (gotta help the economy
)

I agree - stick with the 500D for the sub
In an independent study it was found that all high quality subs preferred to be driven by ClassD amps.
I do not remember which publication it was in or how they actually asked the different subs which type of amp they preferred
- but it makes sense to me

i always prefer going w/ separate amps for sub and highs... simply b/c it gives you options in the future that don't involve scrapping a proven solution... i don't really know much specifically about either of the amps you mention, but unless the Memphis is way under-rated, i think you'd be good.
still, i'm not a huge fan of D class amps... but that's my opinion and while i can justify my opinion... D class amps are fine for sub work... cool running amps too...
well, i'm ready William... amp rack all built, installed and tested... send me that sub... i'm ready to go!
(will post pics when i can borrow a dig cam...)

, maybe i'll go take some more pictures...

I've planned on using the memphis for a while, but I'm toying with the idea of replacing my Blaupunkt PA4100 -- it's bridged running my fronts @ about 225Watts, which is pretty severe overkill. I also want to compare side-by-side a good class AB with the Blau class T while everything else remains constant. I'm not in any real rush, so it probably won't happen anytime soon... Gotta buy a house in the next couple of months!
so my first impression was--"Hmm that sounds good, not really all that loud..." then i looked in the trunk and realized the sub was barely moving!
i've set the gains and levels low to get some decent break-in. it's not shake the car loud (though on some songs it will start rattling things--especially deep bass), but it's very clear, very natural and blends into the music wonderfully, not overbearing at all. i almost don't notice it there until i unplug it from the system (which is what i was after).
it makes my focals sound even better, i've raised the xover point for the front focals to 120hz and set the lpf to 80hz. i can't believe how well the two are blending together.
on rocky music (smashing pumpkins, strokes) the kick drums are strong, steady and clear. on loungey electronic (portishead, andy smith) the synth bass lines are tight, not boomy. on dance music (kylie minogue, alizee) it just hums along rock solid steady, doesn't miss a beat. on rap (tribe called quest, digable planets) loud but not over-bearing
for a power reference, i'm using a kicker 400.1 (birthsheet says 460 @ 2ohm). the amp gains are at 40%, bass boost is off. headunit sub out set at +8 on my alpine 7894 (which really means -7, ask phillip, he understands this). my mid/highs amp is set about about 40% as well and my listening volume is around 15 (out of 35). you figure out how much power it is getting.
the sub can easily get louder, i don't think it will get "shake the car loud" but it will easily get loud enough for music. i don't really know for sure, since i don't have a good reference and i haven't seen this things move at full excursion, hehehe.
more impressions later. i think you guys will really like this.

I ordered my 8" sub, what do u guys think about a footwell application? or anything creative, because my plastic panels are rattleing in my trunk (the pannels that the convertible top folds into) bad enough as it is w/ the sub i have now, i even took out that little peice, the one that caused most of the problem, and the ratteling went away for a while, but now its back.
tons of people have subs in their trunks with no rattling, so maybe you should address that? both pjk3 and sc_highlander are installing this sub, so they can help you with the rattling.
this sub gets loud, but (to me at least) the quality of the bass is so good i don't need to turn it up that loud. by the time things start rattling, theres way too much bass for me. but thats just me.
keep in mind this is still just an 8inch sub, yes it us a super 8 inch sub, but it's still 8 inches. it's not gonna give the sheer thump and bump power of a 12 or a 10, what it does give is great, tight bass in a small enclosure. if you're trying to replace a 12 (or even a 10) and expect the same volume or rattle power, you might be disappointed.
this sub can go into an enclosure as small as .2 cu/ft, a foot well application might work, it's not the best sub for that (because it's a little deep and very beefy). you'll definately need to do some fiberglassing. there is someone on the board that stuffed a sub in the passenger footwell, looks good, but a lot of work.
