My only concern is that with the tray removed there are some sharp edges left around the rear part of the tray, by the trunk. Does the top come into contact with this at all?
So you removed the tray entirely!

Yes you completely remove the tray.

No the top does not come in contact with the metal part at the back.

The reason you get more bass in side the car is because it acts as a single cabin now. Before with the tray it isolated the trunk form the cockpit.

Same reason why bass sounds better in a hatch back rather than a trunk.

Bass is just the movement of air. With the tray removed the air can exit the trunk into the cabin.

I've read some other owners removed the tray, drilled/cut some large holes, used speaker cloth to cover the holes, and re-install the tray.

Yup... it's just pressure relief... I just found it's just easier to remove the tray. What do you need it for? Nothing really.

I may end up stretching breathable black material over the hole so you can

Jasonoff- In one post you mention not to remove the left and right tray parts. In the next one you say to remove the whole thing. Which is it? Mine's coming out and I will have a hard time getting back in there when all is said and done. If it's goin', it's goin' now! And thanks.

The whole thing as in that one piece that's in the picture i posted. That's the "tray" the left and right pieces are the tray side trim.

With the stuff removed and the top up can you see the amps if they are mounted on a spare tire rack? I wonder if you could dynamat the top holder! I would assume that it would make a significant reduction in rattle. I dynamatted (Cascaded) my trunk and around my perfect's and a bit of the spare tire area and have 15-20sq/ft left to play with.

Dynamat only reduces resonance which is basically panel vibration. For the most part a plastic panel will never resonate. The rattle from the tray is caused by air trying to escape the trunk into the cabin. Dynamat would do nothing to help this.

I believe some people have drilled holes into the tray to allow air movement then covered them with speaker cloth. I'll just figure out a way to stretch speaker cloth across the whole thing so you can't see in from the window.

Nice idea. What about makeing a trim piece to go around the try to reduce contact vibration on the edges where the tray attaches. Then you don't have to cover or get extra noise. Add a couple ports into the material and away you go.
