GPS in a phone
So, I've read about people installing standalone GPS devices or even modding it into their dashes etc. I was just wondering if anyone has a setup like mine, where their GPS is actually built into their phone and they just use that instead of complicating things by having a standalone GPS where you would have to put away or set up every time they get in and out of their cars. Or for people who have a daily driver, you would then need to move the standalone over to the other car etc. If you have it in your phone, then you can take it anywhere with you including when you are just walking around town etc. With that said, I have a phone not normally sold in the USA but you could get online called the Mio A701, they recently introduced a newer model A702. But it is basically a combo PDA, camera, MP3 player, video, photos, phone, internet as well as GPS all in one. I know there are cell phones using cell towers to "triangulate" your location and if you lose signal with your carrier, it is useless. Not to mention it is a service, so you get charged everytime. What makes this GPS phone different is that it has a GPS chip built in which talks to the satellites directly, no cell service required to work and you can use any PDA-based navigation software you want, including the two I use iGuidance and Tomtom. Just thought I'd throw this out there to the S2000 community for those like me who wanted a GPS but hated the idea of a separate device to do that, esp with two cars and also didn't like the idea of modding the dash. If anyone has any questions, let me know, otherwise you could google Mio A701 and read up on it yourself. There are a few other phones out there with "real" GPS built in. But in the coming years, I can see this is one area where the cell phone industry is going to go, it just makes sense to have a GPS built into a phone. This is already Nokia's business strategy, but the reason we haven't seen much progress here in the US is because our cell phone companies are trying to keep us down and locked in like sheep. The rest of the world have far more choices and are much more advanced than us when it comes to the cell phone industry. Sad, how a free economy is suppressing progress and not promoting it.
