Default has anybody done this?

i have an 07 by the way... i don't know what the speaker setup is for all other years but has anybody toss in an aftermarket headunit with stock/oem speakers? especially for this model...

does it actually sound better and louder?

will it blow those stock speakers? will it shorten their lifespan?

i have yet to hit 70mph with my top down and i was wondering if the aftermarket headunit will put enough juice into the speakers.

Thanks in advance.

well, an aftermarket HU does make a difference but once u turn it up (i have an alpine 9856...and for me up is pass 20 on vol) the speakers start to sound distorted. but anything below that, i think it sounds fine. but if your lookin to get clarity with the top down on the freeway...ur ganna need new speakers, IMO. im still going with stock speakers right now but going to get components and another amp real soon.
btw..i have an 05'

You might be able to get by with a high powered HU and an efficient set of seperates. You could run the rear channels to the woofer and the front channels to the tweeters. Essentially you'll be biamping them allowing you to double the power sent to your speakers. You'd also be able to fade F to R to help quiet down the tweeter or to bring it up if you need more twinkle. Ultimately you're looking at a 3db gain, which isn't a lot, but atleast you'd be utilizing everything you have.

You can try that and if it doesn't work for you, you can always buy an amp afterwards.

*edit* I forgot all about your headrest speakers. Doing what I mentioned would mean you wouldn't be able to power you head rest speakers...which might not be that bad if you bought some nice door speakers.

A new headunit makes a huge difference, and it should absolutely be your first upgrade. You can have 30 grand of audio equipment in your car, and none of it will matter, because the stock headunit is such a huge POS.

what's funny is... they list 8 speakers. i only hear 2 in the front and 4 tweeter-like speakers behind my headrest.

where are all the speakers located on an 07?

I would purchase a headunit, if it will help. but if i need to upgrade my speakers, i'm just going to roll without music when top down. LoL

2 Bottom of the doors, 2 top of the doors 2 behind each seat. That equals 8. Manufacturers count tweeters as speakers.
