The headrest speakers make a huge difference but are not worth $400. If you are good with fiberglass you can make your own. Mine in the end cost me about $150 and sound great. I have two sets of infinity kappa 1" tweeters that are amped at about 100 watts per pair.
You put $300 into door components, another $300 into a decent amp, and $400 into the headrest speakers (even $200 if you build them yourself). Grand total of 800-1000. For $1k, you can put in a damn good 4-chan amp and a high quality set of components for the doors (or use the amp crossovers instead of passives, save $$$ over buying component set) and you'll have better sound stage/quality without missing the loudness. When I'm cruising on the highway top down, I can't even hear my stock exhaust with my music turned all the way up (LRx 4.300 powering Diamond Hex S600s' on an active crossover setup).

There's your problem right there....stock exhaust! HKS FTMFW with alpine HU memphis audio components and an amp. Sounds great from both ends!
Well, I have a Tanabe Medallion sitting in my garage I have to install, just waiting for gaskets to get here.
And I'm thinking it'll sound great with my Eclipse CD7100 running active with an Audison 4.300 powering my Diamond Hex S600s and a JL 500/1 powering my SI Mag V4 in a WLAURENT tool well enclosure.
