Help designing a stereo system
Hey all,
I just picked up an S2000 and I'm looking to install a stereo system in it. I'm not an audiophile who can detect minute differences in sound quality (I'll mostly be using an iPod anyway), but I want a system that sounds good with the top down at 80+ miles an hour. I wouldn't say money's no object, but I'm not scared to shell out a few extra ducats if it's for meaningful performance improvement.
I'm planning on breaking it into phases and upgrading as funds permit. So far, this is what I have:
Phase I
Head Unit
Kenwood KDC-MP638U
Phase II
Component Speakers
Focal 165VR 6.5" (Replace Stock In-Door speakers)
Amp
PDX-4.100
Phase III
Subs
(2) JL Audio 8W3V3 (Planning on getting fiberglass enclosures made for each side of the trunk to house these)
Any recommendations/feedback is GREATLY appreciated. However, the following is top on my mind:
- Keeping in mind my middle-of-the-road outlook on audio, are these particular choices overkill? Is it going to be loud enough to overcome the loud cabin?
- Is that amp going to be enough to power everything? Do I need two amps, one for the subs and the other for everything else?
- Anything in particular I should consider for installation?
Thanks in advance for any help. I'm looking forward to making this thing sound as good as it looks.

i gotta bump this as well...
i bought mine and it has the stock radio but has aftermarket speakers and a four channel amp. since two of the speaker outputs (rears i guess) are not used, can they be used to power a subwoofer? i want to be cheap too as i'm not into hardcore stereo enjoyment but a little bass wouldn't hurt...

I dont think you'll be able to run 2 subs off that amp. Usually 2 channels go to the speakers, and the other 2 are bridged to run 1 subwoofer. 1 subwoofer should be more than enough for this car anyways.
Also, I don't see a DCI on your list. You'll need that if you want to retain the stock controls on the dashboard to the left of the wheel. Modifry makes the best of of these IMO and it was I use and love.
