Default Is this audio system too expensive? Need advice.

I decided to finally upgrade my stock stereo system.

Seeing as how I'm not too technically proficient I had to get a local installer to put in the system. This guys says he has done several S2Ks and is familiar with the car and the PAC SWI-x units so no problems there.

The one thing he told me is that if I'm going for a 2 speaker install (which I am) I *must* use these Boston Acoustic Pros 6.5s or else "I shouldn't bother", if I want to get some decent sound out of the car with the top down.

Any truth to this?

It was my intention to not spend 1500 bucks on a stereo but that is exactly what I did today. :-(

Head unit: RFX9300 $400
Speakers: BA Pros $500
Amp: RF Punch 250 $400

That plus the wiring, kits, installation, etc came out to like 1700 dollars.

I'm not really an audiophile so for me this seems like a great deal of money for a stereo system. Am I in the ballpark to get some decent sound or could I be doing it for way less?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

You don't want to know the answer (unless you can get your money back). But I would be happy with the equipment that you got, because it should sound pretty nice

so did you get it done already? the only advise is if your ears are happy..then you should be.. i myself went out and looked around for deals and got my system up and running for approx. $800 for a FULL system (HU, SUB, 2AMPS, 3Way door speakers, SWIX, Dynamat, wires..) .. and i could hear it with the top down on the freeway.. even my sub knocks on the freeway.. but it took a lot of research..and A LOT of work installing it..

back speakers 60

ill probably throw in an amp or 2 for the speakers after awhile or when i put a sub in the trunk well

if you install the bostons be ready for EXTREAMLY high tones. i had them in my last car. they are really nice, especially if you already have bass covered. i personally am getting some focal 165k2's, better bass, which is what i am after due to subwoofer restrictions in this car.

I spent:

Alpine cda-7969 900.00
Alpine cha-s624 6 disc changer 300.00
Alpine cha-1214 12 disc changer 300.00
Alpine multi-changer adapter 150.00
Alpine 2 channel amp 150.00 (250.00 retail)
Alpine SPX-137A 5 1/4 components 269.00 (400.00 retail)
+ 250.00 for custom work for the changers.
+100.00 for Rockford Fosgate wiring

= 2419.00

But I'm a big time audiophile. If it sounds good to you, then it is money spent well

sounds a little over priced even with the 6.5 series stuff. You can get the speekers and equipment online and save quite a bit of cash then go to the installer and just pay them for their time. Most shop's run 75$ or so for the amp 75$ or so for the sppekers and 100$ or so for the install of the head unit.

I personally really like the 6.5's when they are installed correctly and with the correct gear. You will need to have mid range bass as well as low punch for the sound to come out right. Remeber that they will sound a lot different in your door then they do on the wall in the shop. I personally believe that you could go with some nice 216RSD's as that is what I did or with some high end focal's or infinities for that price range and you will be a lot happier.
