Help me Build a s2K Sound System
I know Sound depends on personal tastes, but I posted because I want to hear your opinions.
I've read many many of the threads & Andys2 is gonna get a great system.
By answering his questions you've answered alot of mine.
But I can't find a local audio shop that carries all the amps or speakers I like. I've heard quite a few and many left impressions (good '
' & bad'
').
Car audio is tricky because the acoustics are different for each vehicle. I know that the s2k doesn't have the same acoustics as my Odyssey so I won't expect the same quality of sound. But I do want good sound, so what sounds good in a S2K? You guys own and work on 'em.
We all know Quart makes good speakers, and some of us have been lucky enough to hear Focals, but what do we use to power such beauties?
What are your thoughts s2ki gurus?
Bring it.'

alright -- lets backup a bit...
you've left out some critical info...
what kind of music do you like? what sound levels are you looking for? are you wanting realistic reproduction, high volumes, both or maybe a strong rock sound?
and what year S2000 are we talking about? that will also matter some in the design...

It's a 2004 that hasn't arrived yet.
I like sonic clarity, and a warm sound.
Maybe this will help: At home I've got a 5 year old B&K preamp with a 12 year old Citiation power amp (classic Harmon Kardon) running two Acoustic Energy (AE) Aespirit studio monitors at home. AE's are british and quite nice http://www.acoustic-energy.co.uk/. I like my Bang and Olufsen record player more than CDS or MP3S, but alas, we live in a digital age and my mp3s get most of the playtime.
I'm listening to Nora Jones right now, but I like hip hop, electronica, rock, indie rock, and anything experimental. RJd2, Radiohead, Tribe called Quest, Modest Mouse, Bjork, and Stereolab are some of the more popular bands that I listen to. I love jazz but I can't stand it in any digital format, and I can't get a good record player in my car, so regretabbly, i won't be listening to Miles or Coltrane in the car that much.
Definitely high volume but not at the expense of quailty. Cannot stand 15 inch subs. Don't like too many ported 12's either. Too muddy and slow. Sony can't make a speaker. Bose sucks. Awia gonna break soon. Boston Acoustics are nice. I had Quarts powered by PPi's about a decade ago and thought they were great. But my ears are spoiled at home.
I'm getting the s-pods, putting infinity components in them for rear fill. The sub enclosure I got is from Darkknight, it's his old one that fit into the tool well. He's been great and seems very knowledgeable about car audio so i trust his dimensions on a single ten. I'll hook up an ipod, and forget that cd changers ever existed.
I've already got a great sound car: my Odyssey. It's so low profile, too. Nobody would ever suspect it ; I've left it stock on the outside for good reason. It's got old cliff designs components up front. They are wonderful. Two sealed tens in the back. It's way overpowered and it sounds great.
I don't want to totally break the bank, the new S2K has kinda done that already; but no other car is worth the money- it's really a bargin.
I don't really want to bling bling, I just want my system to sing.

I just ordered an Infinity basslink X, 6.5" Infinity Kappa Perfect components, and a Rockford Fosgate 451S Power Series Amp. That's all I'm putting in for now, no rear fill. It's all gonna be controlled by an Alpine 9815 HU.

Waste of money

Honda guy found sound pretty solid deals on Xtant amps. The amp is kinda small but I guess 50 watts RMS is enough to drive your fronts. I've got rear fill so a three channel amp doesn't fit my needs, But thanks for pointing out these prices!
NFR, thanx for giving me this feed back it is really helping me make my decisions. You've been extremely helpful to alot of people and it's rad that this site exists.
Here are my impressions of your impressions:
1. Dont go crutchfield....can find MUCH cheaper prices.....
true, true. . .
2. Forget Pioneer, go ALPINE.
Alpine says "steal me" and "look in the trunk for more goodies", Pioneer says move on this guy doesn't have amps. However this summer when Alpine releases their ipod controller.... tempting, tempting, drool.
3. Entry level MBquarts are complete trash.
Ok, this is good, I did not know this.
4. Pioneer speakers are crap.
They make more speakers than any other company in the world, and thier high end stuff isn't bad considering they're from japan. Have you heard or seen the REV's? Kevlar. Yumm. But yeah, i'd agree that 98% of their speakers are crap.
5.XTANT...waste of money in an s2000
Wouldn't $700 focals also be a waste in an S200 as well? You really can't hear the stereo past 70 with the top down, or so i've been told. And there are Xtant bargins, but only on their less powerful amps.
6. JL......shop elsewhere.......
Yup, too much money and too high of a sales commision. But people love 'em.
7. Octane R, bang for the buck is not there
Really? Hmmm. This is good, I did not know this.
I want to have matching amps and I want to mount both of them in the trunk next to the spare on an amp stand. How much room have I got? I'd rather not get one five channel, instead I want to get a four and a bridged two to power the sub. Any thoughts on this?

the 403A at sound domain is an unusually good deal. get it. generally speaking, Xtants are much more expensive, and thus less of a deal.
