hey guys - why would my sub cut out?
JL 12 w3 dual coil inch sub - not feeding it too much power and when it doesn't cut out it pumps pretty good BUT when it's kind of loud the sub will just cut off - wiring is fine - amp is not hot????
x/over settings set at 60 and less than .5 ohms feeding the thing
any idea on things i could check before i send the sub back
Thanks

Check the ohms on the sub with a multimeter. If the amp shuts off when you are playing it loud the amp is probably going into thermal shut down. How is it wired> is the amp bridged. if so that may be the problem. when an amp is bridged it sees half the ohms. for example. if you have a 4 ohm woofer and the amp is bridged the amp see a 2 ohm load. if the amp is desinged for a 4 ohm load it would get hot and shut down, then it would cool off and play again.
If you used an 8 ohm woofer it would see 4 and work fine. If you have a dual voice coild woofer you may be able to change the way it's wired to change the ohms.
hope that helps

Is your sub wired series or parallel?
check the ohms with a meter. if it's 2 ohms then the amp will see 1 and shut off pretty quick
you may have to wire it in series, that would change the ohms (impedence) to 8 and the amp would see 4. of course it depends on your amp , and what load it can handle
