iirc, i believe the other comments are correct, the dash cruise light won't light up unless you're actually driving and set a speed.

also, this is what happens. the throttle response of the car is much quicker in responding than the cruise control system. so, it ends up like you're riding a bucking bronco. if you set it at 35, it will hammer you up to redline, then yank back down to 20, then back up to 40, then back to 20.... and it does this within about a second or so. it's quite funny actually. it can never quite find and settle at 35.
i had a controls class where we spent a lot of time discussing leading and lagging controls system. in 1st gear, it's definitely a lagging system.
i'd highly advise you to do this on a straight, as turning becomes just about impossible....
