i forgot to mention one more thing, the Lotus Performance midbass, has more midbass than the Reference midbass. although the midrange clarity is not up to par with the Reference, it is a great choice for a little over $400.

I would go for the Utopias myself (if you have the money....the s2000 doesnt benefit from them...you can save some $$$ and get the one line lower) The Bostons are a close second. However, the Alpine SPX line is great for the money, and can be had for about 200 bucks. Remember, all these 600 dollar speakers lose their purpose (part of it) in a noise biatch like an s2k.

Subs....Ive use ID subs in the past, and they were OK. Nothing more. Alphasonik construction and performance is a few leagues up, and the customer service is also a lot better. Im not saying IDs are bad, just not as good.

-The rubber sorround on ID subs isnt that high-a-quality
-basket construction seems a bit thin.
-cones are also made of a cheap material (paper and something mix)
-very boomy, they are good for SPL, not so great for music

Like I said, the only other subs I would get as of now are Eclipse and DVQ from Infinity. Ea makes nice ones as well.

Amps are good but for looks alone, I would just get 2 van goghs, and bridge them together so they look like one big amp.

Alpine SPX series are nothing but vifa drivers. you can make a set for cheaper than the alpine set. as for the way they sound, i feel they are flat. they dont come alive on the attack.

If you feel that Alphasonik is better than ID, that is your opinion, but im going to have to disagree with you. Even though i have never heard them before, a few audiophiles that i trust say they are horrible for SQ.

What is Ea? do you mean Ed

I have 2 sets of Alpine SPX speakers and they sound awesome! It all comes down to tuning and what sounds good to your ears, and as it turns out, everyones ears are a little different. You can take those Lotus speakers and I promise they can sound like complete crap if not properly tuned and amped.

I looked at your Lotus speakers and there spec's against the Alpine SPX series and there pretty close. They're not in their on league... I would like to hear them though. There are so many different types of speakers that sound great to me and yet will sound terrible to someone else.

Bao, you need to go out and listen to 3 or maybe 4 sets that YOUR interested in and then YOU need to decide which ones sound best to your ears. No one hear including myself, Dave, MR_ASDF, whoever, can help you pick the right speakers for you. Just keep in mind your putting them in an S2K, not some Lexus/BMW hardtop car.

Trust me I've heard many, many different brands in the S2000 and only the really crappy brands still sound crappy. If you take the higher end speakers Lotus, Alpine, Focal, Infinity, BA, or whatever, and you take those speakers that range in price from $200-$1000 and you properly amp them to there suggested stock spec's, you'll hear very little differences when driving down the road @ 55mph wit the top down. One may sound a little clearer(more highs) or one may sound like it putting out more bass...(more lows) but if you take all those same speakers(any of which I would use) and mess the tuning up or not tune them at all and they're going to sound like crap... its a fact.

I agree with you on the tuning part, but trust me, there is a big audible difference between Focal and Lotus. Maybe because i am a pretty hardcore audiophile, my girlfriend cannot tell the difference though. all she notices is it doesnt hurt her ears on the highs. one thing i know for sure no other speaker offers is transparency. there really are no other speakers that are transparent like these. of course just my opinion.

I am going to have to disagree with you on that one.

Shame on you, has anyone ever told you not to pay attention to those damn Specs? specs dont mean anything.

I agree on that, but come on, how often do you do that. it is not fair to use that thats CHEATING.

In an s2000, you cannot tell hte difference between good components (Alpine SPX, INfinity perfects) and Top shelf components (Focal Utopias, Rainbow, A.Fischer)...unless the car is parked in a garage, and the engine is off. THis car is too noisy. Sorry, but 700 dollars is A HUUUUUUUUUUGE waste of money in an s2k on speakers, but hey its your car......

Remember, Ill have my finger on the "I told you so" trigger......

Yeah but like I said everyones ears are different... and thank your GF for proving my point

So I guess I should ignore your specs then too??

Send me a pair and I'll prove I can do it.

Everyday I drive it it is a convertible...

Besides your trying to sell them your a distributor... so your kinda bias on the subject don't ya think... its like the Goodyear tire guy saying Goodyear is the best... same difference. Sure they very well may be great speakers, based on the specs,... course I guess those are a lie or something not to be trusted but whatever... either way just remember there's always something better,... and possibly for less money.

just my .02

^ You drive with the top up? I raise my top about 6 times a year. One of the reasons I have MB Quarts is because they are clearly audible across the full range at 90+mph with the top and windows down.

Bao, definitely check out the eD subs. For the size, they're the best I've ever heard. (I haven't heard an Alphasonik though).

I gotta say though this sounds like a huge pissing match. As Dave mentioned this whole thread is becoming irrelevant. Quality is one thing, but sound quality is another. Definitely buy quality products, but splitting hairs among reference lines is completely moronic if the gear is going in an S2000. Sit in your garage and listen to your noise floor with the car off, now lower your top and do it again for a while, then start your engine and repeat. As long as you like the tone of your speakers and the build quality of your amps the rest is inconsequantial. Completely worthless.

Spend your wad of dough and your thoughts on the best possible way to install your equipment. Maybe develop custom angled enclosures for your speakers or something, really don't worry about which $1,000 speaker is "better". Keep your fly zipped up and enjoy the music, and driving, instead.
