I didn't mean to start a battle between you guys it was just an honest question.
I went out to listen to the speakers again, and I'm gonna go with Focal Utopias, I like them alot. Not to mention I'm getting an ok deal on them, $500 for the set. Thanks alot for your help.
Now the sub.. ED? ID? or Sony? I'm just kidding, I'm most likely going to get the idmax, unless I can demo the ED somewhere, right now.. at this moment, I don't believe in purchasing audio equipment that I've never had experience with.
like i said earlier the utopias are a great choice, you can rail them all day with no problem. 4 year warranty also was very appealing when i decided to get mine. same mid bass driver that jm labs (focals home audio company) uses in speakers costing $10,000! i know this because i used to sell focal.
you can put an amp next to your spare and no one will ever know its there. thats where my friend, who is an installer at Car Toys, put mine. my sub is in my tire well like most others except i had a fibreglass bottom molded over my tools for the sub box. no need to relocate tools!
$500 is a pretty good deal. i sold many for the $1200 list price at Car Toys when i worked there. think i paid about $400 on accomadation pricing direct from focal for mine.

The Utopia are fantastic speakers. I recommend them as the best high-end speaker every time. I prefer my MB Quarts, but I understand that my tastes for aggressive highs and lows are a small minority. The Utopias are stunning speakers. I'll again recommend rear speakers, but give the fronts a try. I run with only fronts + strong bass but I think the sound from the MB Quarts is considerably beefier, if a great deal colder.
Good choice Bao on the components, I promise you will not be dissapointed, I was thinking about this thread on the way home, listening to John Mayer, appreciating the beautiful musical reproduction my speakers put out. Highs crisp, clear and precise, mid bass- i dont know how it gets any better, these things are awesome. I thought to myself, it was well worth the $600 i spent for the speakers. 100% satisfied Focal customer for life here. Helpful hint, run the highs on -4db on the cross over.
I fully understand your comment on the sub, if you had the ID max in the past, and its good, my saying would be "if it aint broke, dont fix it". Go with it, if its not suitable for the S, then you can sell it and find a replacement. I cant comment on any other sub, but I can tell you I went through a couple subs before I wound up with the Alphasonik, and I can think of 4 other people which have done the same, something there is got to be right. I am willing to put my neck on the line and tell you that you will not be dissapointed with the Alphasonik with 500 watts going to it, thats how passionate I am about this sub.
You are going to love the Utopia's, let me know when you start the install, you are going to need a 3/4" mdf adaptor for them to fit. Very very easy to make. Check out mine below.
They sure do look pretty big, I'm thinking about dynamatting my doors as well as my trunk, I'm telling you, I'm going to get everything done all at once, none of that one piece at a time bs. I did that with my prelude, I was alway hungry for something different everything I bought something new.
Just a little story of my audio life, i started out 5 years ago on my prelude with Pioneer speakers, a sony head unit that was trashed after a month, and a pioneer sub. Then I switched to kicker with mtx amp, and bought my first Alpine, it was the 7894.. got jacked... got a 9813 after that.. sold it when I was strapped for cash back then.. a year later, redid my whole system.. (2003) Polk Momo MM6s front, Infinity Perfects Rear, Alpine 7897, and the same sub set up.. I loved it, first time ever I can crank it up higher than I usually could. BUT!!!!! Once I really started digging and started listening to Boston Acoustic, Focal, MB Quart.. I was just in awe, I was ready to trash my new set up and start all over, at that time money was not quite as good as it is right now, so I couldn't get these things.. And I sold the prelude last year. Now that I've got the S2K, I don't want to settle for less than what I really want to have in my car..
So this time, I'm going to buy the components, the amp for it, the sub, and amp for it, leave it under my bed for a week, until next paycheck. Take my head unit back from my brother, buy him a Nakamichi to replace it ( I feel bad, the guy really likes my head unit, but so do i so I'll get him a used 45z, i think that's pretty nice of me considering it wont cost him anything ).
Now next question, what are some really nice, good, awesome, fantastic wiring that I can get for my system? Stinger? (i dont like monster cables, i think they suck). Phoenix Gold ?
And is there any alternative to dynamat? that looks better maybe? yeah maybe i'm asking for too much, but i believe that with the right amount of money, anything is available.
Whatever brand speaker wire and RCA's you use make sure the ones you get have twisted conductors. You can use a 14 gauge 4 conductor speaker wire its so much easier to run only 1 wire to each door instead of 2
