Default JL Audio VR650-CSi

Has anybody ever listened to these? I've heard the XR650-CSi's, and they sound great, but the VR's are a step down. I'm hoping to run these without an amp for a few months. I have an Alpine CDA-9851 (50x4 Max) head until and I'm looking to upgrade the components this week. The VR650-CSi's are 15 - 100w handling. I was hoping someone on here has them or has heard them and can give me a thumb's up or down on getting them or waiting to get the XR650-CSi's when I have enough money to buy an amp too.

The stock components really sound like CRAP once you get a new head unit installed... They hiss and distort a lot with more power.

I know this may be a dumb question, but is it absolutely worth it to go for the XR's? I'm not an audiophile, but I LOVE a great sounding system.

Do you think the VR's would run well off of the Alpine 9851 until I can get a new amp? Or would they not sound good off of such low wattage?

Unfortunately I can't comment on the sound of the JL's you are looking at but theirs no doubt that they will work better then what you have now, even without an amp. I think you would have a difficult time trying to blow them with just the power of the head unit as long as you use some common sense with the volume control.

Good luck with you search!

I'm not really worried about blowing them... I'm just worried about them not having enough power to sound the way they're intended to sound or not having enough power to be loud enough. The VR650-CSi's are listed as 15w - 100w power handling. The VR650-CSi's are listed as 50w - 150w.

Also, with a .75" tweeter be too small for the current stock tweeter location in the 2002 S2k?

I have these and they sound great, I'm not an audiophile but I was very impressed, especially for a 6" speaker. I have these in an 02 and circuit city installed them w/ no problem. I would highly recommend them.
