I'm looking for a subwoofer amp for a totally SQ-oriented system - my music doesn't
pound, so my sub doesn't need to. Basically I'm looking for 200-250 watts @ 4-ohms,
physically small for stealth mounting, 2-ohm stable, reasonably cheap. Any
knowledgeable suggestions?
What's the current thinking on class-D versus AB? In the old days many people
thought D was only loooow bass, but of course now they're making "full-range"
class D amps.
Hey oth, dont know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but this alpine amp does 240x1, is small enough that you can mount it under the passenger seat for stealth and works perfectly.
I had it hooked up to my component speakers and sounded pretty good, but I couldnt tell you how it sounds for a subwoofer. Its a 2 or 1 channel, so it should be fine. My new speaker are 100+ RMS so I got a jl 300/2, and am looking to sell this.
I originally wanted to sell this entire package, amp, monster RCA, monster remote wire, PAC box, and speaker wire for ~135 shipped, but i dropped it to 100 shipped. Tell me if you want to work something out.
The D amps may have improved in the last couple years, I don't know, but I would be unwilling to try another one unless it was going to be severly under-utilized (500W amp but only using 100W) and had a great warranty.
I had a Blaupunkt D amp that died twice in "mild" use. The first time was under warranty, the second wasn't, and it was installed right next to my Kenwood A-B amp that has been in the car for 6 years without missing a beat. Blaupunkt stopped making them, as have other manufacturers of class D amps. Several manufacturers of home stereos have also given up on digital amps, though I believe they will make a comeback one day, they're just too efficient to ignore.
Alpine PDX , will play at the same power between 2ohms - 4ohms and is small... if you have a 4 ohm sub it's great since it'll be able to run cooler and more efficent more less like an A/B amp.
