Alright guys, I need your help, my sub is starting to develop a bunch of little dings on the aluminum cone. At first I thought I had dropped something on it, so I bought a grill for it, now I checked the other day, and now there are like 20 of them, so something is causing this. Any ideas, im guessing something from underneath is striking the cone, maybe its excursion is too much, or mechanical distortion. SEAS is telling me there is nothing underneath there, and that I have something in the trunk that is hitting it. I have absolutely nothing in there. Take a look, any ideas what is causing this. Also they can sell me the new cone, and they said I can put it on myself, anyone know how hard this would be to do????
HOLY SH!T!!!!!!! Ive never seen anything like that.....I have no idea what that is....The only thing is...based on the pics, the dimples are sunken in, not raised, which means they are being made from the top, not under the cone.
Hmm, any idea how this putting a new cone process works. I cant stand to see the cone like that. Hmm i wonder what the hell is causing this. I did have a victoria secret's bag in there the other day, i wonder if it got underneath the grill somehow, its not a real protective grille. Maybe its time for a new grille, fishman grill maybe. Damm things!
Wow that's weird... Yeah like Dave said I would think that happened from above because the dimples are in not out. I would definently get a different grill. However I will say that, that cone must be very thin because I've had stuff fall into quite a few different cone without any trouble at all. No dents, rips or scratches.
HOLY CRAP! I have never seen as much dimples as that!
The weird thing is, on my image dynamics IDMAX v3, the dustcap is made out of aluminum also. Many owners have reported that their dustcap developed dimples also. It's weird. Then again, many of them didn't have grills to protect the sub.
As far as reconing, if it's the whole assembly, it's very time consuming and the critical part is to align the coil against the t-yoke so that it doesn't scrape when the cone moves.
I can't see how the subwoofer can create its own dimples like that. Either:
1. something is in your trunk
2. someone is messing around with you and intentionally poking it on purpose.
Perhaps some is messing around with you. the dents looks too concentrated in one area. If the dents existed naturally, then the outter part of the cone would have dents too since they construction is the same. Hrm.. me and my theory
It can't be the excursion because there are 20+ people who are running them without a problem. I'll try to find out more for you.
Little trunk devil, ive heard of this, very common occurrence. LOL
Actually, at first i thought it was mechanical distortion, but like many said, the damage is dented in and not out, so something from above is causing it.
The grill does allow things to get in, its not too protective. I did have a victoria secrets bag in there the other day, so that might of drifted right onto the sub. Or it could be what Gsteg said, the aluminum cone developing dings, could it be from the pressure? I dont know, Im at a loss of ideas at this point. I doubt the bag thing caused it, because they are distributed in a tight area. Gsteg see if you can find any new info.
Any other idea's guys. Looks like the process of putting a new cone on might be too difficult and complicated for me. Never had any problems with my Alpha !!!!!!!
the Fishman chromed grill? i bought one for my e8A and was very disappointed in the mounting method. grill looked nice, but it still had large gaps and the mounting method was no good, imo... i would not recommend it, or i would suggest you get it locally and keep the receipt.
looks like your Trunk Monkey is mad at you -- have you been feeding him 2 times daily?
honestly -- dents in, not out = top not bottom. they look like small impact dents vs larger deformation dents.
i'd bet money that something hit it.... maybe not for long, but something hit it. at a 60 hz tone, you're sub is in and out 60 times in 1 second, so you may be looking at less than 1 second of contact at high volumes.
(oh, and did you find out what Victoria is hiding? i've been trying to learn what her secret is for years and have never been able to find out. i even read all her books, and i'm still not quite sure.)
