It's cant be the power handling of the subwoofer because that would only affect the coil's temperature and possibly the spider ripping. Though Nothing in the motor assembly would cause the dimples. Most likely something is hitting the cone. As to what's hitting it, who knows.
i've used that grill in the past. if it does fit (both diametrically and vertically (remember to keep excursion in mind), i would jump on it. that's a nice grill and a good solution.
