Mixed mono/stereo use of an amp?

tri-mode is a fairly established option on a lot of amps now... i've only seen it used once however, and it worked well enough. the passive crossovers not surprisingly steal some power though...
what's the question again?

I guess the only thing I'm skeptical about is using a passive crossover in the path of AMPLIFIED signal. I have never come across a setup like this nor heard anyone using it.

it's not a problem... passive crossover coils are actually more comon than you realize...
in fact, if you have a MY 2002+, you have/had one in your doors. and if you have aftermarket components, you definitely have a passive crossover in your doors....
i've also seen them used quite commonly years ago (and have used them on other low budget installs i've done) for subs as well as for highs... (that's what a bass blocker is...)
now, what you don't see very commonly are passive crossovers that are pre-amp... but that's another topic all together...
[I]edit:
here's a great photo of a passive crossover that would be used on the amplified side of the signal path... i wanted this pic b/c it shows the individual coils and caps that makeup the crossover.

Problem is, the speakers that I bought, the MB Quart Reference RCE-216, has a crossover that is way to big to fit into this "protector".

no major problem...
i'd have had a better post for you if the POS search function would have been working properly... God forbid you actually have the forum name, the user name, and several key words for a thread...
