Thumbs up My amp does not make sense to me?!?!?!

I have a MB QUART RAB250 amp, powering a 8" ID8 subwoofer. I left all the setting very low for the first while to break in the sub. Now I want to crank it up a bit. So I went to make some adjustments and noticed a dail labelled "crossover range x1 --- x10 ". Here is the link to see the picture and detials of what it does...

http://www.maxxsonics.net/manuals/mbquart/...erence_Amps.pdf

Goto Page 4... that is my amp. The detials of this dial say "The CROSSOVER RANGE selector configures the output of the crossover for X1 or X10 frequency multiplier"

Now, my understanding is, that if I am on the 1x setting, the freq. will be 10-480hz (subwoofer area). If I am on the x10 setting, the freq. will be 100-4800hz (mid/tweets area). Would you guys agree? Here is what I dont understand... When I put that setting to x10, the sub gets REAL loud. I have a subwoofer test cd, which plays freq. at 10,20,30,40...100hz in seperate steps. On the x1 setting, i am able to selectively block out anything above 70hz with tuning of the freq. dial while useing that cd. BUT on x10, I have to goto the bottom scale on the freq dial, becasue 10hz x10 = 100hz. As a result all of the freq. are played during my test cd ( I cant make a 80hz cut-off)... but they ARE LOUD AS HELL. Makes sub 8" sound like a 12" sub.

So if the freq. being played on the cd is strictly a (for example) 60hz signal, why would it get louder with the freq.multiplier on x10 ??? Does this dial have a gain feature built into it as well??? I just doesnt make sense to me why it would get louder...ALOT louder... if it is merely a freq. selecting setting??

What is your mode set to when you do this?

LP (low pass)
regardless of mode, this 1x or 10x should not make the sub go louder...

if you play the cd with it set to LP and it set to 480 is it about the same volume as setting it to x10? I can't think of why it would do that, unless the x1-x10 switch has a short in it.

Simple answer is that it's "louder" because more of the freqs it's playing are more audible on the x10 setting vs the x1 setting.

Just because we can hear 20hz doesn't mean we hear it as well as the higher ranges.

Remember, loud does not always mean better.

If he's playing a pure tone from like a bass CD 60hz pure tone, then there is no "higher" part of the freq. it is 60hz and that's it.

remember that a crossover creates a curve, not a sharp cutoff. if you
have reduced all frequencies > 70 hz to the point you can't hear them,
you are also cutting substantially the ones below 70 hz.
try the experiment of setting the LP to 1x480 hz and 10x10hz and seeing
if they're different with the test tone.

as I stated in my orignal post... there is no freq. but a pure 10hz, 20hz,30hz,40hz,50hz,60hz,70hz,80hz,90hz,100hz ... there is no other freq. being produced...

Perhaps it is shorted... BUT, i fiddled again, and noticed that if i goto ALL instead of LP (all freq are let thru), it is loud as hell as well when useing the pure freq. tone cd.
