Default My non-invasive Valentine One install

Inspired by DJ Qube's post, here's my Valentine One setup I just put together.

The main unit is in a standard position, just to the right of the rear view mirror. Wiring for it is done more or less as described in the S2Ki FAQ. Still a little bit of an eyesore, but it doesn't light up b/c of the remote display and it's in an ideal position for detection.

The remote display is mounted as follows.

For some reason, I tend to like non-invasive installs when possible (i.e. no cutting). I also wanted to position the remote display near the dash instruments... (a) because it makes for a nice intuitive reaction... V1 goes off, look down to see your speed and check the radar display, (b) I didn't want lights/indicators easily visible at night from behind the car, burying the remote in the dash cluster does this. Others have mounted the remote below the right pod, this was lower than I would prefer.

So, I started with a metal mounting piece from a bicycle reflector set:

Interestingly enough, the rounded metal tab fits perfectly into the slot on the back of the remote display, and is held in place via friction and pressure from the plastic mounting piece on the back of the remote (if you look at the actual V1 remote display you'll know what I'm talking about... I hope, since I didn't take pics of the back of it.)

Then I wrapped it in black electrical tape and wedged it between the dashboard and the steering column. It fits perfectly and the electrical tape makes it a nice tight fit:

I ran the cord for the remote behind the dash and up to the top of the steering column, and voila the remote display is in a perfect position for me:

Not as impressive as Qube's install, but works for me!

I have mine in close to the same spot. It's simply centered on the steering wheel housing and stuck on with double stick tape, about 3" to the left of where your's is.

I found it to low when stuck above the right knee on the bottom of the dash.

And while qube's install is cool, I see no point whatsoever in having the remote display there. Might as well put the detector by the mirror and not use the remote display.

I'm still brainstorming a couple other ideas, just have to see if I can make any of them pan out.

I was going to put my concealed display in the same spot as you guys but noticed that it would obscure a number of the S's warning lights.

If you put it in the right place, it will only block one of them.

SSK, do you leave your V1 stuck on your windshield all the time, or do you take it down when you park your car?

I did not want to put the detector by the mirror or anywhere stuck on the windshield. It's quite an eyesore for me there and attracts alot of attention when the car is parked. The remote display in the dome light area is easy to see look at when you hear the "beep", shows no cords or wires, and takes up no real estate. To each his own, I guess.

In general, as far as the placement of the remote display, you should know that most of the 1 1/4" depth of the unit itself is unnecessary. It's just black plastic housing crap so you can attach it to the cigarette lighter (useless for us). The functional part of the remote display is only about 1/2 an inch thick from the front face, except for the phone cord receptacle on the left side. Maybe this will give you a few more options as to where and how you mount the remote display.

You can even remove the phone cord receptacle and solder the phone cord to the same contact points, cut the original housing down to 1/3 of the size, and stick it onto a flat surface (for example). I just went a step further and recessed it into the visor area.
