Have had my second S2K for all of 5 days now and the stereo system replacement begins tomorrow. Here is what I am installing:
Doors - Alpine Type R 6.5" SPR-17S components with 1" tweeters in stock location run with 12 gauge Streetwires pure copper wire. Crossovers in the door.
Dynamat lining the doors behind the 6.5" mid-woofers
Head unit - Kenwood Excelon KDC-X891 with KCA-ip200 IPOD cable
Amp - Alpine PDX-5 Class D 5-channel amplifier with four channels bridged to the Type R's and one for the Sub
Sub - Polk MM12 12" 4-Ohm Sub in the Polk MOMO plexiglass .88 cubic feet box
I will add pics as I get things apart and back together. I already have the door panels off, the door speaking wiring run, and the head unit out. I am not sure yet if I will need to fab some speaker spacers from MDF or not. The top mount depth of the Type R's is 2 3/16". Stock looks to be about 2". Also still trying to figure out where to mount the amp. Maybe over the spare? Any ideas?
looks like a good list. i'll be curious to read your impressions of those Alpine speakers. i have the kicker power/ground wire, and it's really flexible and easy to work with. i ended up putting the fuse holder in front of the battery, which made routing the wire pretty easy.
if the speakers are too deep, you can cut the back of the factory speaker basket off, which gives you a plastic ring.
do you intend to keep the spare tire, given that you're using a sub, presumably in the toolwell? if you're eliminating the spare, then look into the amp board made/sold by PAS2KNut that fits in there: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=232978
I believe that amp should fit over the gas tank if you want to keep
your spare (though once you use your tool well for a sub, you lose
the designated place to put your flat tire should you need your spare).
I have the amp board made/sold by PAS2KNut so I deleated my spare tire. I orderd the spare tire delete kit from HTG and carry the pump and filler with me. IMO the amp board works while keeps trunk (boot) space for stuff like golf clubs
Thanks...I will look into the amp board. I was thinking about putting the amp under the passenger seat. Should be here via UPS in the next hour or so. I should be able to measure and fit then.
Please take pics, as of right now I am still putting the amp behind the passenger seat unless I see a better spot. Getting rid of my spare and tools is not an option right now.
Still have everything torn apart right now. Most of the wiring is run. Ipod cable is run through the center console to the first storage area in the top hidden compartment.
Had to make speaker brackets out of 3/4" MDF and that took some time. These Alpine Type R 6.5" components are HUGE! Tweeters are mounted in the door panels. They actually used the stock screw locations...CRAZY! The 6.5" are what is taking the time. I have attached them to the MDF and used flexible gasket to seal them. Letting them sit overnight to cure.
I dynamated the speaker cutouts in the door frames and now need to dynamat behind the speaker area inside the door. Looks like the PDX-5 Amp is going in a tray that I am going to make that sits inside the spare tire.
Pictures tomorrow while everything is still torn apart. My wife came down to the basement and about passed out. LOL. She said the car looks like it was stolen and stripped bare.
Ok... So I am finally finished for now. Here are some pictures of the process. I can't believe how well the Alpine Type R 6.5" reproduce bass. These things sound really good. The tweeters also sound really clean and sharp.
The PDX-5 amp seems to be very nice so far. I am actually only using the front pair of channels to drive the componet set and the sub channel for the Polk 12" sub. The headrest speakers are driven off the rear channels of the head unit. It has plenty of volume and clarity for my taste.
I am not sure I am going to leave the sub the way it is, I may buy a S2000 specific enclosure for it. I ended up mounting the amp over the gas tank. Fits perfect. This allowed me to keep the spare tire and put the tools in the inside of the spare tire wrapped in towels.
The Modifry wired DCI-2 works great with the Excelon KDC-X891. I hooked up the SCV at settings 4 and 6 as well. Works pretty well. I like setting number 6 the best. I mounted it beside the radio behind the small panel next the passenger's knee area so I can adjust settings if needed.
I know this stuff is not the best money can buy, but it sounds clean and clear with a very nice thump from the sub.
I sanded down the paint to bare metal to attached the ground cable. A good ground is key to any audio system install.
Alpine Type R 6.5" mid-woofer installed using 3/4" MDF spacer with dynamat behind and MDF sealed with clear goop sealant.
Ipod adapter cable KCA-IP200 run through the center console up to the first secret compartment.
KCA-IP200 cable
Super tight fit for all of this stuff to go behind the radio. I had to adjust wires a few times to make sure nothing got pinched. Modifry DCI-2 mounted to the right of the radio behind the triangular panel near the passenger's left knee area.
Dynamat around speaker opening and wiring for the crossover. The crossover was mounted in the door close to the speaker.
I mounted the 100 amp fuse holder in front of the battery and mounted it to the bracket that was already there.
Dynamat behind the tweeter. I tried to completely cover up any air leaks since treble is quickly lost to road noise from the door side.
Polk MOMO MM12 sub and enclosure. Ok for now, but I may buy the specific S2000 box for a cleaner look.
Kenwood Excelon KDC-X891 head unit. This is a head unit I bought in 2007 and still had laying around. Provides 5-volt pre-outs and clean signal.
