Default newbie wiring question

I purchased a used sub and amp off of a local member really cheap. I also purchased a decent hu. I am completely ignorant when it comes to subs/amps/channels. I started doing some reading and it seems like what I want to do is pretty simple. the actual installation doesnt concern me (mounting the amp in spare tire well).

My questions is, is this correct for wiring:
amp powered to battery
amp rca to hu
amp speaker wires to sub
ground amp to frame

someone mentioned powering the hu straight from the battery? am i supposed to do that also?

buy a wiring harness from any audio installation place, and just wire it together.. how big is the amp cause that will determine what awg you will need for your amp kit.

My questions is, is this correct for wiring:
amp powered to battery - Yes, you will want to run the main power wire (most likely a 4-8 awg wire) with an inline fuse attached within 6" of the battery.
amp rca to hu - the rca's should plug directly into the back of the head unit in the "subwoofer/sub rca output. If your head unit does not have an actual sub output, then use the rear output
amp speaker wires to sub - depending on the sub itself depends on how you wire the sub up. I assume it's just one sub, but you will need to check and see if it is a dual voice coil sub. Wiring for this will be around 14-18awg
ground amp to frame - You will need to do this as well. Find a good bolt to ground the wire to, just make sure there is no paint in between the bolt and the frame. This wire needs to be the same size as your power wire.

someone mentioned powering the hu straight from the battery? am i supposed to do that also? This is not necessary. The plug and play harness you can get from any stereo shop will have all the proper wiring in the harness.

An amp kit can be found at any stereo shop and so can the harness for the head unit. A word to the wise about the wiring kit is you need to make sure when you buy the amp kit, that the actual copper in the power and ground wires are close to the actual gauge wire you are wanting. Some cheap kits, like a Wal-Mart amp kit, will list it is 4AWG but the actual copper is closer to 10 or 12 AWG.
