Passport SRX Installed
Finally got a day set aside to install my new Passport SRX Radar/Laser system in my MY2002. Thought I'd post a few observations here, but especially wanted to say thanks to andrewewing who spent about 30 minutes on the phone with me before I did the install. It makes a lot of difference when you can talk to someone who has done it before.
First of all, the system works very well. It is pretty easy to use once you breeze through the manual. I have already found 2 regular spots where the local police are using lasers, my shifters come on, I slow down, double tap the mute to disable laser shifters and slide by their set up. (Some sort of tripod thing). Laser shifters go active again automatically after 60 seconds. Very cool.
Secondly the install is not really any more difficult than a stereo install with an amp and new speakers. The hardest thing (and Andrew warned me about this), was drilling the holes to mount the 2 laser transceivers and radar sensor in the front grill. The slats do not allow you enough room to drill (even with a 90 degree drill), normally. you have to drill smaller pilots (I used a Dremel with the cable drive), and ream or carve to size. Not pretty but the holes get covered up, but it takes some time.
The grill slats will support those units, especially if you mount the laser units far to the outside and the radar unit in the middle near the center vertical slat. These are strong locations. I also followed Andrew's advice and made small backing plates (from SS, didn't have any aluminum on hand), that fit on the underside of the slat. This makes the slat less likely to flex in the wind and is an overall stronger installation. There is a handy hole in the firewall on the driver's side that you can pull the lines thru (have to make a little slit in the harness boot and re-seal with silicone sealant), and they come out in the left side of the driver footwell. It is easy from there to run them behind the trim panel left of the dead pedal and there is plenty of space for everything else under the dash from there.
I took 12 VDC off the accy power socket relay, in MY 2002 at least that was the yellow/red wire. Relay location can be found on page 22-93 in the Honda Service Manual.
Andrew mounted his display unit on the top of his dash all the way to the left next to the windshield frame. His interior is black and so I am sure that it looks good there since the little unit is also black. My interior is red, so I was reluctant to do that. I mounted mine on the steering column (black color), and as close to the wheel as possible to help me see the idiot lights in the bottom row of the instrument panel. I have short legs and sit further forward than most people, so I can see the bottom row of lights pretty well. This will definitely not work for taller drivers.
Anyway....that's the scoop, and thanks again Andrew.

Working on getting a digital camera for other reasons, will post pics when that arrives. However, there is not much to show, which is kinda the point with the SRX. There are 3 black units mounted on the top slat of the front grill and one mounted over the top of the license plate in the rear. The dimensions for all units (including the little display/controller) are on the Passport site here:
