Default Polk Audio 2 Piece Speaker Install w/pics

Let me start by saying how much I like these speakers. They're Polk Audio DB6500 component speakers (woofer & tweeter with crossover). My 2001 S2K's stock (tweeterless) speakers sucked and these are much, much better because of the remote tweeter and overall cleaner, crisper sound. I'm using the stock single CD Honda head unit and it powers these speakers with no problem. I got the speakers from millionbuy.com for $154.06 USD delivered.

Here's how to get the door apart.

You have to pull the interior door lever to see the small screw holding the trim piece in place. Remove the screw and then remove the trim piece.

The grab handle has two rubber plugs hiding two screws. The plugs come out easily using your fingernail. WARNING: The grab handle stays attached to the door panel after you remove the screws--don't try to pull the grab handle off the door!

I used a panel tool to pry up the door panel along the lower edge. The plastic clips pop out and back in again. There's one plastic plug on the door panel up front near the rear view mirror.

The panel has to come up first (unhook from the window sill) before it comes off. Remember to unplug the window and door lock wire connectors before pulling the panel too far away from the door.

Here's how I installed the crossover and ran the wiring.

One of the wires coming from the speaker is coming from the head unit (original speaker wires) and the other wire goes from the crossover to the woofer. The third wire running from the crossover goes to the tweeter (to the right in the picture).

The door has a hollow "Protector" that is perfect for the Polk crossover. I removed the "Protector" by removing its 3 screws to aid in drilling holes for the wires and mounting the crossover.

Here's a shot of how I drilled two holes in the Honda plastic speaker frame to let the two sets of wires through to the crossover. The Polk DB6500 speakers fit perfectly, even using the 3 stock screws in their stock location.

Here's the finished look.

The speakers do come with a surface mount option for the tweeters but you have to cut a big hole in your door panel and the clearance behind the panel is tight. I took my time to do this right and I used about 3 hours to do the install.

I installed the exact same speakers in my 03. I, too, think they sound great, and the price wasn't bad either.

I'm curious what you said the holes drilled in the factory bracket were for? You said crossover, but that was mounted in the pocket.

Anyways, good looking install, and enjoy the tunes

I drilled holes in the stock black plastic speaker frames (seen in the second photo) to allow the two sets of wires to pass from the inside of the door to the crossover.

You're right, the garage is messy. It's one of those Northeast USA small two car garages and it's a pretty tight fit.

You should try and flush mount the tweeters, looks kinda trashy sticking out like that.

Yeah I like that fact you did your own install and what not
but honestly I'm not feeling the location and mounting style of the tweeters... not that it matters, its not my car

I didn't flush mount the tweeters because on the 2001 (tweeterless) cars the driver side door panel sinks inward where the later models have their stock tweeters. So I wasn't sure if I would have clearance for the tweeter mounting cup and brace.

Honestly what does that have to do with you flush mounting them... You didn't have to put them in the same spot as the stock ones. You could have just bought a set of tweeter pods and installed them in those, but even if you didn't want to spend the cash you had other options besides mounting them in the middle of the door...
Even closer to the A-Piller would have been better than in the middle of the door....

But yet again its not my car and as long as your happy with it I'm happy for you.

I flush mounted my tweets in those positions b/c it was the flattest portion of the s2k doors... and i love the look/function of the placement...

I think flush-mounting the tweets will make a world of difference.
