That sucks - can you run the fronts off the HU until you get the amp thing sorted out?
Thanks, William. Timing is actually good...I will be on a couple of business trips next week or so, so I will not be driving too much. Gives me time to figure out what to do...

[QUOTE=TR-S2K,Aug 11 2005, 03:16 PM] Hi Mike,

I am so sorry to hear that. I do not think that fixing the amp is a good option. It is best for you to get a good 2-channel amp with about 100Wrms for your front speakers. PM me your address, I will send you the refund (120% of purchase pirce as pomised) so that you have the fund to buy another amp. Keep the Memphis amp for now, until either you have a chance to go down to Orange County then stop by my home to drop it off, or when I have a chance to go up north, I will stop by to pick it up.

I had no idea why it worked in my S without a hitch, then it became disabled in your system

That sucks man....kinda weird how it was working fine in one car, but freaked out in another.....I guess that is how electronics go - FAST and without warning!

Now I am glad that you beat me to this amp! Sending it back from FL would have SUCKED! Good luck finding another one! Check out
www.onlinecarstereo.com or
www.ikesound.com or
www.cardomain.com

They all have really good prices.....but eBay is still best, but it has its risks!

Hi Mike,

What do you think about 2-channel amp Boston Acoustics GT-22 ? It is rated at 2x75Wrms at 12.6V or 2x100Wrms at 14.4V. Mine is GT-24 with power rating of 2x120Wrms at 12.6V or 2x170Wrms at 14.4V, all power rating are for 4Ohms loads

Dimensions of GT-22: 12-1/8" x 8-7/8" x 2-1/4" which is small enough to fit under driver seat, and you can unconnect all the wires to the Memphis amp then re-connect all the wires to the new amp. You can get one for $249.99 + shipping (+ tax ?) at www.sonicelectronix.com. I do not know if indoaudio.com has it or not.

Ebay has one with buy-it-now price of $199 + $32 shipping + tax. The seller is in Cerritos which is not far from you. If you can pick it up, you will save $32 shipping cost. The seller email: StereoSource@sbcglobal.net.

Personally, I think it is better for you to get Boston Acoustics GT-22 from StereoSource on Ebay.

PM me your address to get things going.

It may be easy to fix, it may not, who know ? But you will loosing times fixing it and you do not have your system to listen to while driving around and that is not good.

I think you will be happier with BA GT-22, email StereoSource@sbcglobal.net to get that GT-22. He has 130 car stereos on Ebay, but only one GT-22. $199 + tax is very good price, if you do not pay $32 shipping.

Don't worry about me, you should concentrate on what is best for your system without a lot more money and headaches. I am doing my parts, you should do your parts. We are still friend, aren't we ?

Hi again, TR-S2K!

OK, here is what I am going to do...

Since I really like this amp, and you gave me such a great deal on it, I am going to contact Memphis. I will send the amp to them for an estimate. If it is reasonable, I will have them repair it. If not, I will look into these other amps.

On the way home tonight, I turned down the sub out to better match the remaining speakers (5.25" Infinity References) and the system sounds really good....only the sound comes from behind me. But I can totally live with this for awhile. At least I have music.

Nsxnext1's tech suggested a more "stealth" install: both amps will fit behind the panel to the left of the spare. What are opinions as far as air circulation there?

And...still friends??? Of course!! I do not hold you responsible for any of this. I witnessed it working perfectly in your car!

Thanks, all,

Mike

I have seen a few installs there, and one was not a small amp! I, personally, would put it under the driver's seat for easy tuning and accessability. I am not sure about circulation, I would think that as long as you yanked you all the surrounding insulation, it would be fine. Make sure you have some clearance around the heat sink.

Hi Mike,

1. NO, it is NOT a good idea at all, I know that you are trying to save me some money, but it may cost you a lot of money out of your pocket, because you will pay shipping cost both ways and the cost to fix it can be high, also the time for then to fix it can be long. Don't worry about me, you should do what is best for your system and that makes me feel better too.

Since you can get the Boston Acoustics GT-22 for $200 + 7.75% tax, if you can pick it up in Cerritos, your extra cost is only about $100.

Phil (PJK3) has Boston Acoustics amp (either GT-20 or GT-22) in his minivan, he knows what good and what not so good. If it is good enough for him, it is good enough for me and you. Since this amp has the " Q-Tune technology combines sophisticated crossover adjustments with Q-Control settings to seamlessly transition rear bass to the front sound stage" it may take a little extra time for tunning, but the end result is it sounds very very good.

2. GT-22 is small enough to be installed under driver seat, your sub-amp is behind driver seat, when you have the fan on (with or without A/C on) you should direct at least part of the air flow to the feet, that way you will have air circulate over the amps to keep it cool. Also, replacing Memphis amp with GT-22 at the same place will enable you to keep all the wiring and very easy to swap the wires and cables. Move these two amps to the trunk will need new wiring (cost more money), loose some trunk space and possible damage if you need to carry some large object in the trunk.

What best for you is email StereoSource@sbcglobal.net to get the Boston Acoustics GT-22 with pickup to save shipping charge of $32 + $3 Shipping Insurance, tell him that you will pay cash at the time you pick it up so that he would save Paypal fee. It is not too far from Long Beach to Cerritos. You may be able to pick up the amp today to install tomorrow, I can help you swapping the amps and tune the new amp if you like at my home.

Phil, if you reading this thread, will you give Mike your opinions about this BA amp ?

Thanks

yup, i'm reading this thread.

as Hoat mentioned, i do have a BA amp. i'm running the GT-40 (55Wrms x 4 @ 12.6V) which is quite capable. when i bought it i did some serious research into this amp, as well as listened to a couple.

sound wise? they were very impressive. and function wise? they were easy to set up and tune.

so, looking further (and knowing Boston didn't make their own amps), i wanted to see who was making them for Boston. i matched designs, functions, options, power output, crossover settings, etc. with every known maker i knew of... and matched the few rumors i heard together... i had read in several places via the press and reviews, that these amps were designed by an Italian amp designer, and made in Malaysia.

well, matching things up and looking at the other conclusions made - it seems VERY likely that these amps are an Audison designed / manufactured amp.
in fact, compare the Boston amps w/ the Audison SrX and LrX series. you'll find there are quite a few similarities.

either or -- my dealer had a lot of success with them, i had an opportunity to get one of their display models cheap (ie near internet pricing), and it was a no brainer. a $500+ amp made by a company i trust possibly using Audison designs for $280? easy choosing.
