The Passport 8500 and the Valentine V1 were rated about equally with some giving the not to V1 and others to 8500, but in virtuall all tests they finished 1 and 2.
The Passport 8500 is much cheaper than the V1
Passport also just released an updated version of the 8500 with enhanced range and a couple of new features. That is the 8500 x50. I don't see how the V1 could beat it now in any practical and unbiased test.

hardwire it and run it behind the trimming. you'd be surprised how easy it really is, and i'm by no means a good electrician. the V1 kit comes with the goods for hardwiring, but i can't speak for the passport since i've never owned one. here's my setup:
