they dont work .. lol.. since the radar detector lets u know ONLY when a cop has his radar gun pointed at u and is ON.. by then they have ur speed. so wats the point.. its somewhat gewd in traffic since hes alreayd have it ON and checking other cars.. but if ur by yourself.. its useless. unless someone know more about radar dectectors den i do..
That statement is completely inaccurate.

I have been able to detect cops hiding on curves on countless ocasions.

Wouldve gotten many tickets if I werent equipped with my Passport 8500.

Why are you giving advice if you've never actually used a radar detector? Why would anyone take advice from someone who is unable to type out a complete sentence, much less the word "your"?

What type of radar detector and how useful it is depends entirely on the type of speed countermeasures used by the police. For example, I commute on I-295 in NJ, where the police use constant-on X-band, which is detectable far in advance by any radar detector. Therefore my $150 Beltronics works great. However in north Jersey on the Garden State Parkway, police mostly use laser, and no radar detector will reliably protect you. In many other places, police use instant-on guns. In that situation, your only chance is to be able to detect the cop shooting people in front of you, and a detector with the absolute longest range such as a $400 Valentine1 or Passport 8500 is your best bet.

So ignore posts by people who say _____ detector is always the best without knowing your driving or what enforcement is used in your area, because really what they are saying is _____ detector is best for *them*, not for you.

what do you mean, a different sound for a different band?
He means that almost every detector on the market makes a different warning tone depending on if it has detected X, K, Ka, or Laser band radar. It lets you judge the threat without taking your eyes off the road.

well.. when X band is detected, I get a simple standard boring "bleep" sound
when K band gets a different sound, a little more harsh (egh, egh, egh)
Ka band gets again, a different sound, more attack like
and laser really gets your attention.. space invader like.. "bleuu bleuu bleuu"

you can filter out the X bands which are usually security alarms.. and you just learn to ignor them anyway.. and when you hear the others, you get trained like a "pavlov dog", foot off gas, maybe brake.. auto reaction.. sometimes weather equipment can set off the laser.. it definately get's your attention..

Basically you don't need to look at the detector to see what they are shooting you with.
plus it's got that feature "V" something (?), which I don't use, don't have to, to shut off your detector in case they are trying to detect if you have a detector, (where they are illegal) .. nice feature for some states..

whistler 1743 model, I really like it and it's not expensive compared to others.. it does the job.. has some really good features..

I have mine mounted right under my rear view mirror, hardwired through my pillar and down into the fusebox.

There were some good radar posts over in the electronics forums recently if anyone is interested. There was also some talk on the new GPS based detector from Escort.
