Replacement Front Speakers
I've just kicked off my audio overhaul and today, after weeks of research and a few installs, I found a set of fronts that really sound great: Kenwood eXcelon (KFC-X168). These 2-ways are a great alternative to components if you don't want to mess up your dash or door panel. They mount without a adapter ring but do require you to cut out the center of the basket. No problem there, just use a Dremel tool and you've got a great snug fit in about 10 mins. I haven't changed out the stock head unit yet but these puppies have already made a big difference. I tried the Kenwood 1677 2-way drop ins but they were really weak in the mids and lows with lots of distortion at moderate volume. I also tried a set of Eclipse's but they weren't a whole lot better. I didn't try the new Panasonic's that Lucid is offering, but I've heard they're pretty sweet too.
I think next I'm going to install an Alpine deck. Lucid says he's trying to get some nice adapters to make the decks (must be IR ready) easily work with the dash controls. After that, add in the rear panels, and a sub. Now I just need to save my pennies.......
Any comments on your experience with the rear panels, recommendations on a head unit, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
