Upon close inspection of an '02 door panel, it looks like the tweeter "cups" are a seperate piece. Has anyone purchased the cups from a dealer and intalled them on an earlier model year? Any thoughts on this approach from the experts out there? It seems like it would be pretty easy to do and gives me a great deal more confidence in cuting my door panels to mount my component speakers.
I don't know about that, but you could do this. The cutting for the tweeters are from behind the stock grilles. They are not as noticable as would appear, as the flash from the digital camera really accentuated the titanium dome tweeters. If you decide to sell the car, and want to keep the speakers, the holes behind the grilles won't be that big of a deal and hardly noticable. I did do some cutting in the pillars and added a second set of the same tweeters. I mounted the tweeters from behind the pillars and covered with black grill cloth - again not too noticable. Remeber, as a rule, the closer the tweeter is to the driver, the better the overall sound of the component set.
badboy3600 i also did the same thing with addidng tweeters in the stock speaker location. I used a drill bit to drill out a set of holes and mounted a 1" tweeter in there with a bracket.
The problem with the stock location is that my leg blocks the sound, if it didn't I would do exactly what you suggested. I actually got to see a 2000 door panel today and there's just a hole, about 3" and the cup is held on with a clip and a little bracket holds the tweeter in place. I will see if I can get the cup thing from a dealer. I guess if I have to cut my door, I'd rather at least have it look like a another model year.
So far no one has posted that this has been done. Several have asked about it, and I think XViper even tried to order the parts but could not get them. He had the numbers but the dealer could not enter them into the ordering system.
Another member replaced the complete door panels from MY00 to MY02. I think this cost him about 1k when it was all said and done.
The list price on the Cups is 53.xx each. Becasue I mod'ed mine, I wanted to know what it would costs to return it to stock. You would also need the metal brackets that hold the tweeters inplace. I assume since they are glued and screwed to the tweeters. That you have to buy the tweeters to get them.
If I saw going to do this, I would look for a salvage yard that had a MY02 and buy the panels from them. The last time I check, they wanted 150 each for them. This would be complete panels, switches, and tweeters.
Good luck on your quest.
BTW: The best "Stock" type of install that I have seen that would place them higher. Is the A-Pillar install. they mounted them under the front edge of the pillars, next to where the glass meets the dash and A-Pillar. They drilled a grill in the A-Pillar, and mounted them under them. Look great.

Johnnydev... You do not want to add the tweeters from a component set in the pillars. The closer the tweeters are to the woofer - the better. The tweeters I added in my pillars are secondary and are the same brand and model # as the ones with the component set. This, of course, opened up the sound a lot more and by wiring these in parallel with the component set, you will get more power from the amp.
IMO, the tweeter pods on the MY 02 cars are not that great (or pretty) that you'd want to install them in previous model year cars. The holes required to fit these pods in the panels are way too big. I've seen pics of custom installs in the same location that look much nicer, require a lot smaller hole and provide a better angle for imaging.
